Latin II Lesson 12: The Imperfect Subjunctive The Imperfect Subjunctive • The imperfect tense is the second tense that we will study using the subjunctive mood. It is one of four tenses that make up the subjunctive. It can be active or passive. • Only the present tense uses the mnemonic device, “we beat a liar”. • To form a subjunctive, imperfect form, find the second principal part (whole) and add to the end m, s, t, mus, tis, nt if it is active, or r, ris, tur, mur, mini, ntur. There are no exceptions to this rule. An example • The verb laudo, laudare • lauderem • lauderes • laudaeret lauderemus lauderetis lauderent Passive example • laudo, laudare • laudarer • laudareris laudaretur laudaremur laudaremini laudarentur Ancient Capua The Hazards of Travel: Capua • Capua hoc tempore urbs amplissima atque pulcherrima erat, maxima omnium in hāc parte Italiae. In planissimo loco posita, vias latas optimasque habuit. Ut urbem viderent, Furianus Publiusque unum diem manere constituerunt. Homo quidam eos videns dixit: “Ut omnia bene hodie videatis, ducem habere debetis. Ego vobis omnia monstrabo; deinde vobis optimam cenam dabo; meliorem enim cibum in nullā urbe invenietis.” • ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ Opus Magni Offae Copyrighted 2012 Opus Magni Offae Productions
