1. If the wide-flange beam is subjected to a shear of 𝑉𝑉 =
20 kN, determine the shear force resisted by the web of
the beam.
2. The steel rod has a radius of 30 mm. If it is subjected
to a shear of 𝑉𝑉 = 22.5 kN, determine the maximum shear
stress.
3. Determine the maximum shear stress in the T-beam
at the critical section where the internal shear force is
maximum.
4. The beam is made from four boards nailed together
as shown. If the nails can each support a shear force of
500N, determine their required spacing s and s’ if the
beam is subjected to a shear of V=3.5 kN.

Determine the shear-stress variation over the cross
section of the thin-walled tube as a function of elevation y
and show that 𝜏𝜏𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 = 2𝑉𝑉/𝐴𝐴 , where 𝐴𝐴 = 2𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋 . Hint:
Choose a differential area element 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = 𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅𝑅 . Using
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = 𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦, formulate Q for a circular section from 𝜃𝜃 to
(𝜋𝜋 − 𝜃𝜃) and show that 𝑄𝑄 = 2𝑅𝑅2 𝑡𝑡 cos 𝜃𝜃 , where cos 𝜃𝜃 =
�𝑅𝑅2 − 𝑦𝑦 2 /𝑅𝑅.
