and Computer Engineering II
Preparing and Making an
Oral Presentation
1
Why Do I Need to Know How to
Make an Oral Presentation?
• Industry – present your work to management.
• Academia – present your work to colleagues
and/or students
• Personal – presentations to clubs, religious
organizations.
2
Requirements/Information for this
Assignment
• Lab 10 – Final Project (5% of class grade)
• Deadlines:
– Week 13 Friday 04/25 11:59pm
•
Proposal (10 points)
– Week 15 Monday 05/05 11:59pm
•
•
•
•
Arduino Code (10 points)
MATLAB Code (10 points)
Demonstration Video (30 points)
Group Presentation
– Week 15 during your lab section
•
Present your project (40 points)
3
Proposal
• The goal of your project!
• State whether or not it builds on a previous project.
– explain what that project was,
– why you did it
– how you plan to expand on the old project.
•
•
•
•
Worth 10 points of the project grade
Turn in on eLearning (Monday 05/05 11:59pm)
Proposal ~1 paragraph
Label proposal file as follows:
–
LabSec# lastName1 lastName2
• Include in your proposal:
– Group members names
– Course section Number
4
Arduino and MATLAB
• Arduino code
• Worth 10 points of the project grade
• Code must be documented for full credit
• MATLAB code & graph
• Worth 10 points of the project grade
• Code must be documented for full credit
• Graphs must be properly labeled
• Turn in on eLearning (Monday 05/05 11:59pm)
• Return any borrowed components
5
Demonstration Video
• Worth 30 points of the project grade
• Label video file as follows:
–
LabSec# lastName1 lastName2
• Turn in on eLearning(Monday 05/05 11:59pm)
• This is your project demonstration – show off what you accomplished!
• Time limit:
– 30 – 60 seconds
• Points will be deducted for videos that are too short or too long.
6
Demonstration Video
• Your video must show/include:
1. Download of code to Arduino (You may fast forward through
this process to save time.)
2. All your faces, showing you were all present for the making
of the video
3. Narration
4. Project operation – hardware and serial monitor aspects
7
Demonstration Video
• Be sure to consider:
•
•
•
•
Sound quality
1. Is there background noise?
2. Can we hear the narration clearly?
Quality of picture
1. How will it look on the big screen?
2. Is it jittery?
3. Is the picture properly oriented?
Orientation: Slides are landscape, so your video should be also
You may include special effects, but they won’t make up for a
poor recording.
8
Presentation
• Based on presentation, not success of project
• Turn in on eLearning (Monday 05/05 11:59pm)
• Present it during your lab meeting – last week of
classes
• Time:
– 3 minutes for groups of 2
– 4 minutes for groups of 3
• 5 slides/ group of 2
• Label your power point file as follows:
– LabSec# lastName1 lastName2
9
Presentation
• Show your contribution to the project
• Informational, not teaching slide
– Easy to scan, large font, san serif
– 25 word max excluding graphs & schematic
– Color, animation optional
– Slide must be easy to read
• Your title should be your main point
10
Presentation
• All group members should present equally
• ~ 60 seconds long
• Points deducted for talking too long or not
long enough
• Practice your presentation (time & content)
• Talk to the class – not just me
• Don’t read your slide!
11
Presentation
• Grades are divided as following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Cover Page – 5 points
Clearly explain the project problem/goal – 5 points
Clearly explained the steps/solution/approach – 5
points
Arduino Flowchart – 5 points
Hardware schematic – 5 points
MATLAB graph – 5 points
Easy to follow and understand presentation – 5 points
Group members presented equally – 5 points
12
Presentation
• Your group cover slide should include:
Course name and section number
Group member names
A title that indicates which project you chose
(i.e. NOT “Lab 10” or “Final Project”)
13
What Should I Put on My Power Point?
• Show off your contribution to the project.
• Required:
• A flow chart for your Arduino code
• A schematic of your hardware
• A Matlab graph
• Optional:
• An illustration of a challenge you
overcame
14
What Should I NOT Put on My
Power Point?
Examples:
• Your Arduino code
• Complete sentences (your speech)
• Small font
15
Informational vs. Teaching
Power Point
• The next slide is a teaching slide.
• The one that follows it is an informational
slide.
• Create an informational slide for this
presentation.
