How to Stay Active While Recovering from a Foot or Ankle
Injury/Surgery
Being in a cast/boot and not able to bear weight through your leg doesn’t mean you
can’t stay active, it just takes some creativity!
Typically it is safe to start these activities one week after surgery.
Upper Body Lifting/Core Training
You can do any exercise while sitting or laying down.
Upper body weights
Core/abdominal exercises
Side leg lifts or leg extensions
Crutch around- it’s a great cardio and core/arm work
out
Well leg stationary biking or rowing, use your
uninjured leg to pedal on a bike/row while allowing
your other foot to rest on the pedal/machine
Arm bike- some gyms have access to these
Pool- swimming and water running. Do NOT get in a
pool if you had surgery within 4 weeks
Make sure to elevate your leg after your workout in order to
reduce swelling and pain.
