it involves the vulnerability of Internet-of-Things devices and hardening of those systems [1].
Additionally, the tool correctly highlights the importance of using industry standards such as CIS,
ISO, and OWASP [3]. Indeed, these frameworks cannot be overlooked in the sphere of cyber
defense.
However, the first issue of the critique relates to the way the tool presents the methodology used
in the research. While mentioning the seven-step approach employed in the work, ChatGPT fails
to provide detailed analysis of it. More specifically, it does not pay enough attention to the most
significant steps in this regard, including attack surface calculation and risk matrix development
[1].
The next problem that can be observed relates to inappropriate presentation of the results obtained.
Namely, ChatGPT accepts the reliability of the results of this study and considers it appropriate to
present the effectiveness of the technique under discussion in this manner. Meanwhile, one can
argue that the results of a single case study cannot be considered sufficient.
Furthermore, it should be stated that practical challenges involved in implementation of the
discussed hardening approaches were not considered adequately. It means that the AI fails to
mention such possible difficulties connected with cost, time restrictions, and influence on the
system's performance that may occur in practice. These issues need to be discussed.
Finally, it should be mentioned that the tool provides a rather superficial representation of findings
made in the course of the research. In other words, while discussing the effectiveness of CIS
controls in the context of cybersecurity, ChatGPT does not consider other points of view on this
matter.
Considering all aspects presented above, it is possible to conclude that ChatGPT-generated critique
helps to identify the major points of an academic paper, however, it fails to make proper critical
analysis of those findings and ideas put forward by the author(s).
To sum up, AI tools can be considered quite helpful in getting acquainted with a scientific
publication and assessing the importance of its findings. However, AI critiques cannot be seen as
primary sources of information because of insufficient analysis of the source.
