Hello, everyone. I am excited to talk about the person I respect the most: James Watt. H
is work is a perfect example of what mechanical engineering is all about.
Watt was born in Scotland in 1736. He was a skilled tool maker who did something rem
arkable: he changed the world by improving the steam engine. At that time, steam engine
s, like the Newcomen engine, were used to pump water from mines, but they were very sl
ow and wasted a lot of fuel.
The main problem was simple: the engine had to heat up and cool down the main cha
mber repeatedly for every stroke. This process wasted too much heat and, therefore, too
much coal. This meant the engine was not practical for running factories.
Around 1765, Watt had a great idea. He figured out a way to use a second, separate ch
amber, which he called the separate condenser, to handle the cooling. Because the main e
ngine chamber stayed hot all the time, the engine could run much more efficiently. This si
mple change cut the fuel needed by more than 75%.
This improvement was a game changer. It allowed the steam engine to power all kinds
of machines and factories, starting the period we call the Industrial Revolution.
Watt’s influence lives on today. The unit of power we use all the time, the watt(W), is na
med after him. He also created the term horsepower. For me, James Watt is the symbol of
efficiencyand smart problem-solvingin mechanical design. As a future mechanical engineer,
I hope to follow his example of changing the world with small, smart changes. Thank you
.
