Why Detailing Reinforcing
Bars is a key to good structural
design?
Muhammad Qasim
• The structural integrity of the reinforcement is
necessary to improve structure continuity,
redundancy, and ductility.
• Continuous reinforcement or tie between
horizontal
framing
members
offers
this
redundancy.
• ACI Code Section 25, provides the requirements
of reinforcement detailing. ☺
BY PROVIDING GOOD REINFORCING DETAIL:
1.
The engineer ensures that his/her analysis and
design is accurately executed at the site.
2. The structure's construction is in conformity with
the design intent and design criteria.
(If a structure is in an EARTHQUAKE zone, for
example, proper reinforcing detailing is essential to
withstand the EXTREME events.)

• EVEN A SLAB DIRECTLY SUPPORTED ON WELLCOMPACTED SOIL AND NOT SUBJECTED TO ANY
BENDING, SHEAR, OR TORSION MAY REQUIRE

SHRINKAGE AND TEMPERATURE CRACKS.
• SHEAR STIRRUPS AID IN THE RESISTANCE TO
THE PRINCIPAL TENSILE STRESSES CAUSED BY
SHEAR FORCE. HIGH-STRESS COMPRESSION
ZONES IN BEAM AND COLUMN JOINTS MAY
NECESSITATE THE USE OF HOOPS.
• Bars in tension may not be fully effective unless
they are developed.
• In order to ensure sufficient bonding on each side of
the critical section, bars must be embedded in
concrete using a combination of methods such as
anchorage length, hooks, mechanical anchorage
devices, headed deformed reinforcement.
(small detailing could help reduce the effect of some
high abnormal loading not considered in the design.)
