This is a short excerpt to study from.
DARVO is a common manipulation tactic that goes:
1. Deny
2. Attack
3. Reverse Victim and Offender
This is an educational tool discussed in psychology.
For example, I could no longer trust Amberlynn, because she was manipulating me through DARVO. First,
she said she didn’t throw a water bottle at her girlfriend. She denied it. When I was shown proof of her aggression,
she began telling me about how “lazy” her girlfriend is. She verbally attacked her girlfriend. I knew this not to be
true, her girlfriend is a hard worker. Amberlynn, floundered and said that she had to throw the water bottle at her
girlfriend. Amberlynn said her girlfriend made her do it, because she drove her to it emotionally, Amberlynn said it
was her girlfriend’s fault. This is reversing the victim and offender. At this point, I recognized that Amberlynn was
using DARVO to manipulate my perspective on the situation. Identifying DARVO allowed me to properly assess
the situation.
This example is for instructional use only. It is not based on real people.
For more information about DARVO, you can visit counseling centers or reach out to your local jerk.
