The 99 Names of Allah
Look at the 99 names found on Wikipedia. You can do a search or copy the address below:
https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_God_in_Islam
Please examine ALL of the 99 titles that are included there.
Answer the following questions.
1) Which if any of the titles are incompatible with Christian understandings of God? Why?
The Avenger, The Abaser, The Humiliator, The Subduer. Christians believe God judges sin, but focus
more on God’s love and forgiveness through Jesus.
2) Are there any of the titles that appeal to you? Are there any of the names that make you
uncomfortable? Why?
The Merciful, The Loving One, The Provider, The Wise. These feel comforting and match how Christians
see God’s care and kindness.
3) Lastly, do you see any areas for rejection from Judaism to these tiles? Why or why not?
Judaism would agree with most of the names that describe God as creator, holy, merciful, and just, since
those ideas come from the Hebrew Bible too. They might reject or question names that sound too harsh
or that come from Islamic, not Jewish, sources. Overall, Judaism would agree with most of the names’
meanings but not the Islamic context behind them.
