WHY USE PILES…….?
Pile are structural elements are used in construction to transfer the vertical loads into the
hard strata/high density soil. OR when the structural load is high and we can’t transfer the
load in lower density and medium density of soil then we use the pile foundation to transfer
the load on high dense soil
•Pile is use to support the structure
on weak and unstable soils.
•Prevent settlements.
•Longevity of buildings.
•Ensuring the stability
•Area with challenging soil conditions.
Types of pile
1.Driven pile : precasted pile is place with the help of hamering action or force fully inserted
into the ground.( suitable for wide range of ground condition including dense, soft and
variable soils).
I.Timber piles: made for wood, suitable for non-Aggressive soil
II.Concrete piles: precast, offering durability and strength,
III.Steel pile: it constructing for high load bearing capacity
IV.Composite: combine materials for added strength and corrosion resistance (timber &
concrete or steel & concrete)
2.Bores or drilled piles: drilling with the help of boring machine then concreting. ( soft ,
loose or variable soil).it is used for difficult ground condition where driven pile is less
suitable.
● Agar cast piles : groundwater or loose soil condition causes sloughing.
● End bearing Piles :it is used when a strong soil or rock layer exists at a certain depth.
3.Screw pile : it is suitable for both permanent and temporary foundation. Rapid installation ,
adaptability to many soil(clay , silt , sand , and rocky soil).
● Friction Piles or combination piles: weak , soft and saturated clay or silt
4.Micro piles :it is used in strick restricted areas When poor quality of soil is present and
more chance to settlement(ensure building settlement and stability).
3-to-12-inch dia
Deep piles to stable strata: peat or very weak soil
Sheet piles for lateral support & friction pile for vertical load: loose or waterlogged soil
4.
Reasons for using pile foundation
●
●
●
●
In presence of high ground water table or water logged condition.
Heavy or uneven structural load required to transfer to the deeper stable strata.
For structures near rivers, seawater, or flood- prone zone to provide stability.
When large lateral forces (wind, earthquakes) are expected.
