I. PURPOSE: In this essay you will summarize, compare and contrast, draw conclusions, and
give your opinion.
You will work on this essay in class for two days (see dates on syllabus): Day 1: Writing
workshop to share ideas and Day 2: Essay in class.
II. DAY 1: WRITING WORKSHOP TO SHARE IDEAS:
A. Assignment to prepare for the workshop. To learn more about the world of work and how it
has changed, interview two adults from two generations different from your own. If possible,
interview someone who speaks Spanish. For example, you could talk to someone who is 65 or
older and someone who is over 30. Ask both people questions about their first big job.
You can use questions like the ones below and, of course, use your imagination to come up with
new ones. It isimportant that you take notes as they will be useful when writing.
1. Can you describe your first important job?
2. Why did you consider it important?
3. How did you get that job?
4. What were your responsibilities?
5. What did you learn from that experience?
6. Would you do it again? If not, what would you do instead?
7. Can you describe the biggest challenge you had in your first job?
8. Has that job influenced your life? In what ways?
9. Do you think that field of work has significantly changed you? Why?
10. What advice would you give me for my future work?
