B1- Final Test

Chapter 1 The meeting
A handsome/ beautiful and confident/shy young man with a fashionable/ unfashionable haircut
walked into a restaurant. An elderly/ enormous waiter was talking to a middle-aged/ young lady
with a slim figure. She looked very shy. A younger woman of medium height/ weight was standing
by the bar, looking serious. The young man walked up to her.

The way that people dress has changed a lot over the centuries, and clothes that were once
confident / selfish / fashionable can seem very strange just a few years later. Similarly, someone
who is the ideal weight / height / haircut in one period may seem too thin or too fat in another.
The idea of how a man should look if he is to be described as handsome / selfish / rude can
change. And even the way that people figure / behave / seriously, and how we feel about it, is
different from one period to another. For example, nineteenth century, young girls were expected
to be shy / male / keen and not speak unless someone spoke to them. Now, though, in many
countries they are expected to be much more elderly / confident / middle-aged — no different
from a boy, in fact.

Dear Saskia
I promised to tell you about our flat here. It's not bad really.
The bathroom is very small, but at least it's brand new / basic. The kitchen, though, is rather
rough /old-fashioned. There isn't even a fridge!
Luckily there's a broad / thick balcony and we can put the milk there at this time of year. We'll
need a fridge in summer though, when the equal / average temperature here is over 350C.
The landlord has a couple / few of other flats in this block and he says he'll put fridges in all of
them. I hope so!

We have two bedrooms: mine is tiny/ huge. I have to keep my clothes in the hall cupboard
because there's no room for them. But anyway, we're warm and comfortable. Must Stop now and
go to college.
Love to everyone back home,

This week's film choice
I’m sure you've seen all the fantastic articles / ads / stories for the film Ten Steps. It's about a
ank robber who wants to commit the perfect crime. This film is one of the best thrillers / soaps /
Video clips I've seen for a long time. The actor Mark Dempsey plays the main man / person /
Role perfectly. I asked the author / reporter / director of the film, Martina Helstrom, why she
ad chosen Dempsey. She said she knew he was the only actor in his early 20s who was capable
f a first-class performance / review / culture. Most of the film was made on the streets of Los
ngeles, not in the film company's cinema / factory / studio in Hollywood. Go and see it!

Dear Mum
How are you? How are things at home?
Well, it's Saturday and I've done one week at university. I'm so pleased I decided to do a degree /
law instead of doing that job at the hospital. I attended my first essay / lecture on Wednesday and
it was really good. The 3professor / education was friendly and what she said
was interesting. She's asked us to 4hand / write in our first essay by the end of next week! I
didn't know how to use the computer in the library but someone strained / showed me what
to do, and I'm going to start writing it now. I hope I'll get a good 6result / grade for it from the
professor.
Lots of love
