CHAPTER No. 5: POLLUTION AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Question No. 1: what are the main causes of the air pollution?
Answer: The main causes of air pollution are the combustion of fossil fuels and
wood. The pollutants produced by combustion include nitrogen oxide, Sulphur
dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon gases, together with large quantities
of particulates-tiny particles of solid material such as soot and dust.
Question No. 2: Why is it dangerous to run a car engine in a closed garage?
Answer: it is dangerous to own car engine in a closed garage because when the
supply of an air is limited, car exhausted fumes contain a large quantity of
poisons carbon monoxide.
Question No. 3: What are particulates and why are they harmful?
Answer: Particulates are tiny particles of solid material such as soot and dust.
Inside our bodies they get into our lungs and other parts of the respiratory system
and produce the disease such as:
a. Asthma
b. Bronchitis
c. Pneumonia
Question No. 4: What is difference between the greenhouses effect and global
warming?
Answer: The greenhouses effect is a natural process that keep the earth
temperature at comfortable level. Global warming is the global change in the
world climate caused by the increased greenhouse effect as a result of air
pollution caused by human activities.
Question No. 5: What is greenhouse effect?
Answer: The greenhouse effect is a natural process that keeps the temperature
on the earth comfortable. Certain gases in the upper atmosphere make it harder
for the near energy to escape into the space.

Question No. 1: In your own word describe how acid rain is produced and how
it damages ecosystem?
Answer: Acid rain is produced when gases such a Sulphur dioxide and
oxides of nitrogen in vehicle exhaust fumes and smoke dissolves in droplets
of moisture in air. Although acid rain looks and feels quite harmless. It can
kill tree fish and other water animals. It can also eat into stonework and
metal and wash certain important mineral salts out of soil reducing the
amount of these minerals available to plant
Question No. 2: List three types of air pollution that can occur indoor?
Answer: Some of the types of air pollution which occur indoor include fumes
from cooking and heating on open fires on traditional stove, tobacco smoke and
the fumes and vapours given off by paints varrisles glues, polishes and cleaning
materials and insecticides used indoor.
