Description of Skill
To prevent infant from presenting any signs and symptoms of hypothermia by implementing heat
loss prevention measures.
Indications
-Newborn infants

Outcomes/Evaluation
The patient maintained body temperature no
less than 95F.
Potential Complications
The baby can go into respiratory distress if the
temperature decreases beyong acceptable
limits.

CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
-Assess infants temperature
-Provide a warm enviornment such as
warmed blanket, radiant warmer
-Keep baby’s head covered
-Maintain resuscitation equipment near by
ready to use.
Client Education
Educate on all the ways babys can lose heat
via either convection, conduction, radiation,
and evaporation.
Nursing Interventions
-Frequently monitor the baby’s temprature to
determine any deviation of normal range.
-Promote a warm environment for baby.
-Provide continous cardiac monitoring.
-Have emergancy equipment on standby.
