VOCAL BRANDING AND TIPS IN SPEAKING
What does it takes to be a better or best speaker? Does it happen overnight? Is
it just a simple drill learned in months of two or three? Our instructor led us
to two video presentations of vocal branding and tips in speaking. I didn’t
expect that in half an hour, I will be learning important concepts that will be
useful in my field being a teacher. So how it does?
The first video talks about vocal branding. According to the speaker “Your voice
is like your thumb print, or your facial features, it is unique and authentically
you. It is the most important element of your vocal brand”. Upon hearing those
lines, it made me think “How do I sound?” I am a petite girl with of course not
too loud voice. Do I have the power it takes speaking authoritatively? Or do I
sound like a dumb woman? It started to play in my head. Stating the 5
elements namely: Intensity/loudness, Inflection/intonation, Rate/ Fast or slow,
Frequency and lastly, the Quality. I started to have a thought of “Hey, maybe I
can apply these patterns into my teaching”. The speaker in the said video was
able to deliver well the content and context of the subject matter. Maybe, if I
would be an English instructor, I will also use this to facilitate my teaching.
Another you tube video presented discussed tips on speaking. While the initial
video talks about the theories and elements, this on the other hand talks about
the application. The first speaker (Simon Sinek) talks about perspective. He
says that effective speaker must change his/ her perspective. It is not what you

can take but what you can give that really matters. If people see that you have
done something or tried something, then they will be interesting to hear that
something from you. No need to boast of all the scholastic achievements or
work history. Your perspective in life will be all that matters. Another speaker
in the name of Isaac Serwanga adds another 3 tips. He called it the 3A’s. These
3A’S includes Authenticity engagement, Awareness and Audacity. He starting
statements says that public speaking is fundamental. And yes! I agree. In all
endeavor, speaking is essential. Communication is vital. It is not just what you
can share to others but also, what others can hear from you. From the 3 A’s, I
can say that it is all interrelated with one another. A good speaking requires
good authenticity engagement from its audience to raise awareness of the
subject matter with audacity.
In relevance to the article entitled Challenges faced by Students and Teachers
on Writing in ESL Context: A Literature Review by Moses R. AND Mohamad M
(2017), I shall say that the aforementioned videos can be of a big help to
address these problems. The videos tackle more about speaking and not much
of writing but it can be a big help for professionals especially teachers to gain
strategies on teaching effective English. Professional to be exact needs these
kinds of presentations to as a refresher of his/ her communication and
language skills. Furthermore, if these kinds of videos will be used in secondary
and tertiary level, then maybe we can expect a better result of linguistics and
grammarians in the future.
