Warm-up and Objective Discussion For homework, students will have watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiGvGjxbLfs ● Welcome students and ask them about the video they watched for homework: What animal did you see? ● Divide students into partners. Ask the following questions, allow partners to talk, then check their answers together as a class. ○ Why do you think these animals were used? ○ Which two words did the video focus on? ○ What else do you remember about the video? ■ Elicit pronouns that answer Who (he/she/it/ect) and Whom (her/him/us/etc) ○ Create a question with the two words in the video. ● Teacher invites students to leave partners and join the class again. ● Objective discussion: Today, we’re going to learn how to correctly use who and whom in a sentence. Instruct and Model ❑ R ● Explain the difference between who and whom: ○ who = subject ○ whom = object ○ Write this table on the board: WHO I, You, She/He, We, They WHOM Me, You, Her/Him, Us, Them Example 1 - WHO Q: Who was at the party? A: She was. He was. You were. We were. They were. Example 2 - WHOM Q: To whom did you send invitations? A: I sent it to her, to him, to you, to them, to all of us. ● Discuss the above pronouns in relation to who/whom. ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S ● Provide more examples: ○ Pen: Who gave the pen to you? I gave the pen to you. To whom did I give the pen to? I gave the pen to you. ○ Practice with more examples. (cookie, email) Guided “Who” and “Whom” Practice ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S ● Write these sentence on the board (and more): ○ Tom gave the gift to Jennifer. ○ My parents drove you home. ○ The girl delivered flowers to her friend. ● Students work with partners to create questions with who/whom ○ Ex. Who gave the gift to Jennifer?/To whom did Tom give the gift? ○ Teacher asks students to share questions with the class. Independent Practice - Interview Assignment Part 1: ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S ● Students ask these who questions to the teacher (subject pronouns in bold text) and teacher responds: ○ Ss: What is a special gift that someone has given you, and who gave it to you? ○ T: When I was 10, my dad gave me a train set. ○ Ss: Why did he or she or they give you this gift? ○ T: He gave it to me because it was my birthday, and he had a train set when he was a kid, so he wanted me to enjoy the same thing. ● Working with a partner, students ask and answer these questions with each other. Part 2: ● Students ask these whom questions to the teacher (object pronouns in bold text) and teacher responds: ○ Ss: What is a special gift that you have given to someone? To whom did you give the gift? ○ T: I bought a phone cover with the Claude Monet painting, “Sunflowers” on it and gave it to my friend Belle for her birthday. ○ Ss: Why did you give the gift to her, him, or them? ○ T: I gave it to h er because she needed a new phone cover and she loves art, especially Monet’s work. ● Working with a partner, students ask and answer these questions with each other. Assessment ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S ● Partners create their own who/whom questions and practice asking and answering them with each other. ● Teacher randomly asks a few partners to perform their who/whom questions/answers for the class. ● Students (and teacher) provide feedback on the usage of who/whom and subject/object pronouns.
