LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
1. How does assessment improve student learning and teaching?
Assessment is critical in the process of learning and motivation. The
assessment enables us to recall all the knowledge they gained from the subject; it is a
sort of evaluation where students may also assess what they learnt, how well they
learned, and where they suffered. It enables them/us to assist ourselves with various
learning styles. It is also a kind of reflection in which we may observe how well we
understand and deal with various types of valuable information.
The assessment assists us in determining the skills and abilities required to
perform well. It's valuable feedback for us learners. It is also a procedure for us to
recognize our own strengths and flaws. We have a better chance of doing better the
following time. Through retrieval, assessment also helps us strengthen our long-term
recollection.
It is also a type of measuring; how extensively, thoroughly, or broadly we
understand and use the essential information that we have learnt.
2. One-third of the class failed in the written exam in Anatomy and Physiology.
What could be the possible reasons why most of the class failed the exam.
Explain your answer through the lens of principles and qualities of assessment.
Anatomy and physiology are the most perplexing disciplines for me as a
biology student. If you are unfamiliar with the body's structures and how those
structures work, you may receive a low mark on the exam.
According to the module lesson 3, it says that "No test or assessment asks all
the questions or poses all the problems that might appropriately be presented in a
comprehensive coverage of the knowledge, skills, and understanding relevant to the
content standards or objectives of a course or instructional sequence." Instead, only a
sample of the relevant problems or questions is presented”. Exam questions are
sometimes vastly different from what pupils studied before to the exam. Their
anticipated topic or question on the test paper does not meet their expectations, which
could explain why one-third of the class failed.
Sometimes the assessment qualities are not met, or are met in excess. It's
possible that the instructor did not provide any assessment forms before to the
examination, or that he did not administer a summative test to determine how well his
students grasped his subject. As a student, a quiz or summative test is required before
to the examination because it informs me of what I need to review or what
information I lack.
What will be assessed must be clearly defined and constantly relevant to what
you taught your students. If you haven't exchanged knowledge on a question, don't put
it on the test paper. They should go over more of what the instructor shared. Small
things can sometimes be the most important. As a student, I also ignored little
information that I had no clue were significant. As a result, it's possible that it's one of
the reasons students failed.
3. What would be our educational system look like without assessment?
It is pointless to study if you cannot evaluate what you have learned. Students
may not do their best in class if assessment does not exist in our educational system.
Worse, students will dismiss the value of education. If there is no assessment, they
will not comprehend the difficulties of studying. The most difficult aspect for us
students was the assessment. It will scrutinize how well you understand the topics or
information you have learnt.
Assessment is an important part of learning since it aids students in their
learning. Students can decide whether or not they understand the course information
when they can observe how they are doing in a class. Students might be motivated by
assessments as well.
4. Richard always gets perfect scores in all the formative assessments in General
Biology. However, he got the lowest score during their final exam. It was found
out that he was experiencing anxiety two days before the exam. Do you think the
result of his exam is valid? Explain your answer.
Daily classroom learning activities are not the same as final exams. Everything
you've learned will be tested in the final exam. You must go through the beginning,
where your instructor begins from the very first topic to the very last. Students may
become anxious because there is no guarantee that what they have reviewed is
sufficient. Daily school learning exercises are simpler than final exams because they
just cover one topic that your instructor covered that day. Unlike final exams, you
must recall all of the pertinent details.
Anxiety has an impact on our memory. When people are worried, they have a
tougher time recalling knowledge. Anxiety's unpleasantness and pervasive presence
tend to trump other cognitive activities. Anxiety impacts a child's entire thought
process, not just memory. This can make it difficult for them to understand a lecture,
explain answers to questions, or compose phrases during exams or other tasks.
Therefore, his exam result was invalid for me because he was anxious at the
time.
