What does the
following
diagram show?
How is it
useful?
Constellation patterns are useful for memorizing
stars in the sky.
Explorers used constellations to navigate. Ursa
Minor, or the little bear, contains the North Star, a
bright star that hovers right over the north pole.
Knowing the location of that star means knowing
where north is, which is pretty important for getting
around without the help of a map.
The North Star can also tell you your latitude based
on how high it is above the horizon.

What is this picture
showing?
The Pointer Stars are the two bright stars
in Ursa Major that can be used to find Polaris,
the North Star. The two
stars, Dubhe and Merak (Alpha and Beta Ursae
Majoris), are part of the Big Dipper asterism.
A line extended from Merak through Dubhe
points in the direction of the North Star.
