Question 9 -16
Read the text below and answer questions 9 – 16.
There are many reasons why we should read every day.
Reading regularly strengthens the brain. It brings the existing neural
pathways in the brain to life. This is important as it ensures our
brains remain elastic and active. On top of that, when we read a
story book, we have to remember a lot of things such as the
characters, settings, plot and so on. As we remember the details,
new synapses are created and existing ones are strengthened. In
other words, we are improving our memory as we read.
According to various studies, reading can help to improve our
health. Besides lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s, studies have also
shown that reading reduces stress, boosts happiness and overall life
expectancy. In fact, it alleviates anxiety and depression. All these
are possible because reading an engaging book will distract us and
keep us in the present moment, letting tensions drain away and
allowing us to relax.
In addition, reading helps a lot in our day-to-day life. It gives
us new knowledge that may come in handy. Our vocabulary will
widen as well. Vocabulary is really important as it helps us express
our thoughts and opinions. Lastly, our social skills will improve as
well because reading enhances our problem-solving skills and
provides topics for discussion and learning.
