Phonetically, language is made of
various kinds of
sounds produced through the
throat, the tongue, the lips, and
the teeth. Language is
primarily sound because the
sounds of language have primacy
over their
representation in writing. While
the sounds of foreign languages
may sound strange or
difficult to us, all of them can be
described with reasonable
accuracy by accounting
for the movements of the
articulatory organs that produce
them.
