Direct and indirect speech
Example: Sheela said,” I don’t like mango juice”.
In the above sentence when we notice the tense that the conversation has
taken place in the past. That is understood by the word of said (showed in the
box) So we have to change the whole things in the inverted commas in to past
tense as: Sheela said that she didn’t like mango juice. (Here we must not use
comma or inverted commas.
Now change the following in to indirect speech
1. Nimal said, “I cannot drive cars.”
2. Sita said,” They will complete their work next Friday.”
3. Mather said,” I am having a severe fever.”
4. Father said,” I may come late in the night.”
5. The teacher said,” I am going to explain a difficult sum.”
Answer The words in the bold letters get changed as follows
1. Nimal said that he could not drive cars.
2. Sita said that they would complete their work the following
week.
3. Mother said that she was having a severe fever.
4. Father said that he might come late in that night.
