File formats & their suitability for your
product
Why are we doing this?
With your coursework you’re creating a PowerPoint & may be using
a variety of different types of file. Including images, videos, sounds.
As part of your coursework, you need to know about these different
file types.
You also need to know what platform (e.g. website, PowerPoint
(kiosk), Smart phone) the file type is best suited for.
Before we look at file types…
What is compression?
Compression is used to reduce file sizes and change various attributes of an image
file. These attributes include:
file type
resolution
dimensions
bit depth
Lossy versus Losless
Compression can be lossy or lossless.
Lossless compression means that as the file size is compressed, the
picture quality remains the same - it does not get worse. Also, the
file can be decompressed to its original quality.
Lossy compression permanently removes data.
Over to you…
Work on the different worksheets which will be given out to you.
There are 4 worksheets:
Images
Video
Sound
Animation
What you need to do next…
Using the worksheets you’ve been working on, answer the below in a new PPT
slide:
What type of file format is it? Lossy or lossless compression?
Tell us more about the file format. Is it widely used? What’s the quality like?
What platform is it best suited for? (websites, PowerPoint, phone, PC)
