Australian office, the full service event supply
company will hold an extensive selection
of Mojo’s crowd barrier products including

Craig Edwards, Operations and Account

for Mojo Barriers on the Metallica Tour and
Future Music Show in 2013 – we could see
that there was a serious need for a quality
barrier product in the region.
“It was on the Metallica show in Kuala
Lumpur that we met Jay Neil and Andrew
Warren from EHQ Projects, and we knew
that if anyone was to represent Mojo in
the region it was EHQ. Their professional
approach to providing quality sound, light
and staging equipment for Metallica was very
impressive. They were at all times committed
to customer satisfaction.”

Modular Display Inc. launches PreSonus
StudioLive AI
PHILIPPINES: June 4th saw the official launch
of the PreSonus StudioLive AI at the Celebrity
Sports Club, in Quezon City, Philippines.
Organised by PreSonus distributor, Modular
Display Inc., the event saw a strong turnout
from across the country made up of system
rental business owners, school and church
sound technicians and even some from the
broadcast industry. On display were the
StudioLive AI mixer, AI speakers as well as the
Sceptre and Eris monitor range.
Interestingly for Modular, preparing for the
presentation only re-affirmed their belief
in the PreSounus solutions. “During the
sound check, we encountered two minimal
problems. First, the 250 Hz feed back that
was coming from the 312AI monitors. We
were able to use immediately the SMAART
of our VSL since the laptop was still being
used for the powerpoint. Suddenly, we
remembered that the 312AI has a
switch button for monitor use at the back
panel. We switched it on then magically, the
250Hz feedback was gone. It was like the
312AI used its brain to solve the problem,”
said a pleased Alvin Quisumbing, President of
Modular Display Inc.
He continued, “The second issue is that we
needed at least 2M height (Measured from
the floor to the centre of the High frequency
driver) to clear the audience and get a
reasonable front to back propagation for the
328AI on pole mount on top of the 18sAI.
In reality, we were met with a huge “drop
wall” niche on top of the operable wall rails
between ballroom A and B. So much Early
reflection on the 2M “drop wall” caused the
room to ring around 6 to 10K. With very little
time left for a major reconfiguration, a simple
10 degree mechanical tilt forward on the
pole mounted 328AI saved the day. The 6 to
10K ringing frequencies were gone. Simple
provisions but it worked!”
Once the audio was perfected, the night
started with a Doxology from Greg de Leon
(Senior professor at UP College of Music).
Greg held the mic as he sang the “Lord's
Prayer” , and BOOM, he sang like Luciano
Pavarotti. What a way to open the show and
keep everybody's blood pumping.
This was followed with the presentation
proper. Key points were focused on such as
the difference between the new StudioLive
AI from the 1st StudioLive; it's connectivity;
it's RAM power; new features; software
and what to expect in the future. For the
speakers side Modular focused on the unique
speaker design and the PreSonus / Fulcrum
partnership. “We made clear differences of
traditional co-axial and the DSP controlled
Co-Actual, it's Ipad controls, how good and
how loud they sound as well,” said Alvin.
“Everybody in the room was so amazed.”
“European speaker brands are now very
popular here in Manila, but with the
StudioLive entry in our market, things will be
re-shaped. I heard a lot of details and new
instruments that I thought was not present
while playing my favourite CD. The vocals and
instruments were so clear and it's really loud.
I am now getting new clients because of the
328AI. Can't wait to get a pair of 18sAI,” said
Frad Bernardo of StreetSound
Reiterating his amazement Lheo Cabuang
from Myuzikmiks added, “It was so good, I
can't believe 2,000W came out from such a
small package. Amazing!”

a new system that has been integrated into
the ProX line and M32 console.
On CAN as a distributor, Smart had this to
say: “CAN are one of the most passionate
Turbosound distributors we have. They are
great distributors and since distributors are
seen as extensions of manufacturers, they
are a great partner to have. Chad [Batchelor]
is so dedicated to our products that I'm

Turbosound on the left and Midas on the

Chad Batchelor heads the team at CAN.
He explained the M32 hardware and
software in detail and informed everyone
that the shipment to Asia would begin
between June-July of 2014.
Joining the already long list of manufacturers
distributed by CAN such as Denon DJ and
SOMMER CABLE, is none other than audio
equipment manufacturer - Midas Consoles.
Celebrating the union, the team from CAN
recently held a 'pre-launch' party of the
Midas M32 digital console in Singapore's
Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre
with over 100 clients, friends and general
supporters.
With a casual air familiar to any CAN event,
the team (geared up in custom-made Midas

the slogan “Legendary Sound Quality”) mixed
and mingled with guests while taking the
time to formally thank their loyal supporters
with special awards.
Most notable were those given to Singaporebased production company, Expo AV, an
avid supporter of CAN's service for years
and Andrew Chiam, director of ShowMedia
Production, who recently purchased 138
units of the Turbosound Flashline system.
Under the same parent company as Midas,
CAN paid homage to their 4-year Turbosound
distribution by inviting Senior Technical
Support Specialist, Howard Smart to give a
small presentation on the Flashline system
that was released in 2011. As the first 2-box

to accomplish. Midas used to be known as an

our customers that we understand their

Sindo Exports brings pristine KV2 Audio
experience
SINGAPORE: Sindo Exports, the authorized
distributor for KV2 Audio in Singapore
and Malaysia, recently held a speaker
demonstration for the brand at the Singapore
Polytechnic Convention Centre.
The event unveiled KV2's latest VHD series
and the K-RIG range to an intimate crowd,
where systems integrators, engineers and
more gathered to experience the robust
system live and in person.
Forming the heart of the demo session were
one VHD 2.0 module hung above the stage,
with a VHD 1.0 mid high cabinet serving
as down-fill, both driven by a VHD 2000
amplifier. Reinforcing this were 4 x VHD 4.18
active driven sub-woofer systems powered by
the VHD 3200 amplifier.
The VHD have been designed to revolutionize
the concert sound market by offering
unparalleled quality, power and coverage,
with huge cost savings in terms of size,
weight, transportation, storage and set up
time. VHD can be flown in minutes with its
simple proprietary fly system which locks into
the handles on each cabinet. Various hang
points and an easily adjusted chain provides
tilt as required.
Also in the limelight were the newly launched
K-RIG series.
Placed in a ground stack setup, the K-RIG
consists of the KT2.0 fully-horn loaded mid/
high module, KT2.15 sub bass cabinet and
the K-PAK 2600 proprietary amplification and
control system. It is fully active with three
amplifiers in the K-PAK driving the bass, mids
and highs. This allows for optimal control,
protection and output from each of the
system components which is ideal for small
to medium production market and DJ sector.
An additional ESD15, rigged on a tripod and
driven by an ESP2000, was deployed as full
range without sub-woofers.
Attendees were encouraged to move freely
throughout the venue to experience the KV2

patterns through a playback of contrasting

designed to address the requirements of
today’s most demanding simulation and
training applications. Its unique, dual input
architecture makes it the only WQXGA

DS Pro upgrades NEXO inventory
Bangalore is home to many of India’s pro
audio companies, and DS Pro joined the
scene in 2004. Over the past decade, this
dynamic young company has worked on
a variety of concerts as well as corporate,
religious and educational events. The STM
system joins other NEXO elements in the
company’s inventory, which already included
GEO S, RS18 and PS10 cabinets.
INDIA: Based in the boomtown of Bangalore,
DS Pro is the first Indian rental company to
purchase NEXO’s flagship STM modular line
array system.
The 108-cabinet system, comprising 36 each
of the M46 Main, B112 Bass and S118 Sub
cabinets as well as 8x 45° N-12 line monitors
and 20 x NX4x4 amplifiers, was supplied by
NEXO’s Indian distributor Sun Infonet.
“We like to think our advanced technical
solutions stand ahead of the competition
and gratify an extensive range of clients,”
said DSP Pro director, Dhinakar. “The prime
reason for choosing a new high-spec PA was
to be the best in the country, and to capture
the international market. We were looking to
upgrade to an international standard system,
and discovered that the NEXO STM was doing
well around the world. Now, we are all set for
more international events. I’m sure we will
make a big impact with our new STM, and
having this state-of-the-art equipment means
we will be able to provide the best sound for
our clients.”
Dhinakar also appreciates the way STM
combines the functionality which he has
come to associate with NEXO with new
technical innovations. “The system is
designed so it produces super-powerful,
super-flexible sound while also being very
easy to set up and operate,” he continued.
“The Scale Through Modularity concept
means it can perform well on small or large
applications. It is quick and easy to rig and we
will be able to use it on every single project
we take on.”
The STM Series is the first scalable
modular line array on the market. Its
concept combines the best of NEXO Alpha
functionality with the technical innovation
of NEXO GEO waveguide designs, delivering
flexibility and modularity with exceptional
sound quality, throw and ease of rigging.

Taronga Zoo Relies On
Shure For Royal Visit
AUSTRALIA: When Sydney’s famous
Taronga Zoo heard that The Duke and
Duchess of Cambridge, along with
Prince George, had included them in
their 2014 Australian tour itinerary, they
wanted everything to be perfect. Who
wouldn’t with millions of people watching
worldwide?
“We decided that the Shure Axient
Wireless Management Network would be
the ideal solution as it is able to provide
redundancy and frequency diversity to
ensure a line always remains working,”
explained Dave Wright, Technical Account
Manager Event Communications for The
P.A. People.
Taronga Zoo’s most talked about QBE Free
Flight Bird Show is held in an outdoor
amphitheatre, where The Duke and
Duchess sat facing the stunning backdrop
of glistening Sydney Harbour with high
levels of international media gazing back
in. This is where the use of Shure Axient
Wireless Management Network came in
handy for Taronga Zoo Trainer, Brendan
Host. He successfully presented the show
to the special guests using the Shure
Axient Wireless Management Network
specifically to combat the busy media
activity which had created a hostile RF
environment on this day.
With the Royal visit looming, the Zoo
contacted The P.A. People to express their
concerns about the significant level of
media and activity on the harbour, and
how this might affect the performance of
their radio microphones housed within
their bird sanctuary. With the Royals due
to partake in the QBE Free Flight Bird Show
in front of an international audience, it
was critical that the microphones worked
flawlessly.
Shure Authorised Distributor for Australia,
Jands, arranged for Taronga Zoo to
secure a demo system for the event,
confident that it was the right answer for
mission critical delivery in the RF hostile
environment such as this.
“We were bought in to support in an
operational role that day,” added David.
“After training by Jands, we had two
staff install the demo system and we
operated the system on the day. There
were only four wireless microphones used
– two handhelds and two lapels – which
performed flawlessly. It was definitely the
correct solution.”

Robert Juliat Celebrates Success With
C&C Lightway
SOUTH KOREA: French lantern manufacturer, Robert Juliat, is
enjoying increasing success in Korea with long-term distribution
partner, C&C Lightway.
“We are up against strong competition from long-established,
premium-brand Japanese manufacturers, particularly for
conventional fixtures like Fresnels and ellipsoidals,” says C&C
Lightway’s Hwan-Soo Chung. “However, we have worked to raise
awareness of Robert Juliat’s great reputation to the same level it
experiences in the follow-spot market where we have enjoyed a
good market share for several years.”
C&C Lightway, which has worked with Robert Juliat for over
twenty years, promoting the brand in a strongly competitive
market, recently supplied Robert Juliat lanterns and followspots to Seogwipo Culture & Arts Center, Yeonggwang Culture &
Arts Center and Wooridle Church in Seoul where the company
was responsible for the design and installation of the stage
engineering and lighting systems.
Wooridle Church is now the proud owner of Robert Juliat Victor
1800W MSD follow-spots, while the Yeonggwang Culture &
Arts Center has taken delivery of a large inventory of RJ 329HPC
2000/2500W, RJ 329HF 2000/2500W and RJ 310HF 1000/1200W
Fresnel fixtures plus RJ 614SX 1200W tungsten zoom profiles,
RJ 710SX2 2000/2500W tungsten zoom profiles and an Aramis
2500W HMI follow-spot.
Significantly, the Seogwipo Culture & Arts Center has also taken
stock of RJ 310TKHF 1500W Fresnels – models which have been
designed specifically for the Korean market - along with an equal
number of RJ 310HF 1000/1200W Fresnels and a pair of Aramis
followspots. The RJ 310TKHF has been redesigned from the
standard model to accommodate a 1500W/230V lamp specifically
required by the Korean market.
“Robert Juliat is ideal for our market as most Korean venues are
multipurpose,” continues Hwan-Soo Chung. “The Robert Juliat
range is so versatile – with good light output, variable zoom
profiles and a choice of light sources – that the fixtures can be
installed with confidence in these venues knowing that they
will perform beautifully whatever task they are called upon to
perform.”
Robert Juliat CEO, Francois Juliat, and Sales Director, Claus
Spreyer, supported C&C Lightway on its stand at the KOBA
Lightfair, Seoul in May as the company celebrated its twentieth
anniversary. Robert Juliat Fresnel, PC and TIBO lanterns were
shown alongside RJ Cyrano, Victor and Lucy follow-spots.
“C&C Lightway had a strong appearance at the KOBA fair
attracting a lot of clients interested in Robert Juliat products,”
confirmed Claus Spreyer. “We really feel the high influence C&C
Lightway has in the South Korean market and appreciate their
endless engagement for the Robert Juliat brand.”
“Robert Juliat is one of the oldest stage lighting manufacturers in
the world. Their name itself works in our market,” said Hwan-Soo
Chung. “They are one of the most innovative lighting companies
to develop new products using the latest technologies. We are
very happy with our long-term partnership with Robert Juliat, a
company with whom we share vision and values.”

delivering exceptional services to the Middle
East's top companies and clients. Keen to continue
with the tradition the company added Showline's
high performance SL BAR 660 and SL WASH 180
luminaires to its arsenal.
Fonoon has an extremely impressive portfolio
backed up with experience managing a broad range

aspect of an event, including the lighting, sound,

In order to offer its clients original and exciting

"We're actively look out for the most innovative
products to provide our clients with fresh ideas and exceptional

products that we have stocked this year is definitely the Showline
luminaires - we trust Philips, so when a new range becomes
available we are immediately interested. The SL BAR 660 is so
versatile, we can use it vertically and horizontally and the in-built
effects are ideal for delivering stunning effects quickly. This is
great when it comes to creative stage making - I just love the
unusual effects and applications that these luminaires provide."
The Showline SL BAR 660 linear luminaire delivers an exceptional

The luminaire is also capable of being used as a wash or as a

maximum flexibility and originality. The luminaire is also backed
by the exceptional design standard of all Philips products, which
gives Fonoon's event managers complete peace of mind.
"The colour output and control is incredible and they're very

TSM & ITE College West Host Avolites
Competition 2014
time frame. Participants were judged on
their technical expertise, creativity and
synchronization.
For the light show itself, 8 x VL770 Spot
luminaires together with 4 x JB-Lighting A8
and 2 x A12, were used for the competition.
Contestants were evaluated on an Avolites
Tiger Touch Console, an industry leading
lighting console provided by ITE West.
SINGAPORE: The Institute of Technical
Education (ITE) College East had much to
celebrate at the annual Avolites Competition
in Singapore. Organized by Avolites
Distributor, Total Solution Marketing (TSM)
and held at the ITE College West campus
grounds, the lighting competition provided a
competitive platform for students in various
Light & Sound faculties within Singapore.
Aimed at evaluating and encouraging the
lighting programming talents of participants,
the competition also allowed students
from various colleges to come together to
exchange ideas and information.
This year, the competition opened up to
include the polytechnics, expanding the
number of participating schools from 3 to
5. A total of 9 contestants from 5 different
colleges – ITE Central, ITE College East, ITE
College West and for the first time, Republic
Polytechnic (RP) and Nanyang Polytechnic
(NYP) – took part in this year’s competition.
Malcolm Murugam, a Senior Lecturer at
Nanyang Polytechnic commented “This
competition gives the students really good
exposure. They have to think on their feet
and work within a very short time limit and
this gives them a taste of what it will be like
in the real working world. It’s also good to
see the students interacting with like-minded
individuals, establishing a good appreciation
of how things are done using a simulated
environment. It brings their creative aspects
into play and they also get to experience the
Avolites console since we don’t use it at our
school. So the exposure in all aspects has
been highly beneficial to our students and
teachers.”
The event was hosted by students from ITE
West who, for inexperienced presenters,
seemed to keep the crowd entertained from
start to finish. This was evident from the
loud whoops of laughter that came from the
students and teachers alike.
Though the competition began early in the
day, by lunchtime the pool of contestants
had been narrowed down to just 5. Each
finalist was tasked to design a 1 minute
mini light show in under 15 minutes, testing
their ability to programme within a limited
Having kick-started the competition in
2013, Tevin Heng, Executive Director for
TSM remarked, “We’ve been supporting ITE
colleges since 2007 and we truly believe in
the benefits of education and what it can
bring to the industry. ITE recognised a need
in the industry for qualified and trained
personnel so we took it upon ourselves to
wholly support ITE on their initiatives for the
industry. Avolites has been a great supporter
of this as well. It’s a pity they were unable to
attend today’s event but I’m really thankful
for all the support they have provided to the
students over the years.”
All contestants were noticeably nervous
considering this year’s judges consisted of
industry personalities such as Daniel Loh,
Technical Director at The Star Performing
Arts Centre and Sanjay Jegatheesan, an
accomplished Lighting Programmer and
Designer and Avolites Titan Trainer for South
East Asia. Completing the judging line-up
was international Lighting Designer and

A 2nd year NITEC student, Haziq seemed
stunned when he was announced as the
winner. Later he shared that it was his first
time not only winning anything but even
entering into a competition. “I got great tips
from my school trainer and I’ve worked really
hard for the past 5 months. I really feel like a
star right now, it’s great!”
When asked what were his plans upon

certainly, “I want to become a Lighting

The 2014 edition of the competition has
dramatically gained traction from its
predecessor with a total of 200 supporters

representatives have hinted that plans have
been set in motion to open up to even more
schools in 2015 and possibly shift locations to
accommodate more students and guests.
Chan Lay Lee, Course Manager for ITE
West Electrical Engineering department
commented on the support they have
received from TSM over the years: “Total
Solutions has been a very close working
partner with us for a long time now. We
initially engaged them as consultants and
they have always delivered what we needed
and more. They provide very prompt service
and are always very helpful. We are still new
to the industry and to train the students
we wanted professional personnel from the

exactly what TSM delivered.”

Electro-Voice ETX Loudspeakers Launch
In Sydney
In the evening, during the official launch
event, a NAMM-style demonstration of the
ETX family took place. Pairs of each model
and pairs of combinations were put through
their paces to various soundtracks. The
cardioid mode for the ETX subwoofers was
also demonstrated.
After a presentation of the key loudspeaker
features, The Robertson Brothers, local
EV-endorsed artists, entertained the crowd.
Again, the music was channelled through
various combinations of the ETX Powered
Loudspeaker family.
AUSTRALIA: Wenty Leagues Club, in the
centre of Sydney, and one of the largest sport
and social clubs in the state of NSW, played
host to the official Australian launch of ETX
Powered Loudspeakers.
The club’s Starlight Auditorium is frequented
by local and international artists. Some of
the older club members still remember the
young Bee Gees, Jerry Lewis, and Johnny
O’Keefe gracing the stage.
Following a recent and extensive renovation,
the venue was fitted with an Electro-Voice
XLD line array system, including X-SUB subwoofers, EVU and EVF speakers. A few weeks
after the install, the Starlight Auditorium
was used to showcase the entire family of
Electro-Voice ETX Powered Loudspeakers.
With the concert stage packed with two
or more of each ETX model, the invited
pro-sound dealers, audio-consultants,
production and hire companies, got more
than they bargained for. Crisp, powerful and
clear sound filled the entire room, and the
subwoofers could be felt a long way back.
As a treat towards the end of the event, the
in-house sound technician allowed the guests
to experience the sound from the EV XLD line
array system. Representatives from audio
magazines commented on both the power
and the great sound produced by the ETX
family, while pro-sound dealers had trouble
deciding which models and combinations
sounded better. “Great sound,” and “they go
hard,” were frequent comments.
During several one-hour sessions held
throughout two days, audio professionals
had the opportunity to get up close and
personal with each ETX model. The sizeable
concert venue provided a great environment
for speakers with such high power and SPL
levels.
However, it was a statement from the bar
tender that probably summed up the evening
the best: “I am a big audio enthusiast. I have
never seen or heard anything like this before.
This was awesome!”

Palm Expo China 2014 Takeaways
Date: 26 – 29 May
Venue: New China International
Exhibition Centre, Beijing, China
Space: 100,000 sqm
Visitors: 62,000
It's a Wrap
The 23rd edition of the Palm Expo China
rolled out interesting insights on the
hardware and software fronts, as well as
fresh debuts to the China market. Check out
the review for all the show floor highlights!
Show Floor Highlights
Yamaha's QL1 was in the limelight as it
garnered a great deal of interest on the show
floor.
Featuring virtually all the facilities of
Yamaha's industry-leading CL series consoles
in a very compact form, the QL1 can be
seamlessly integrated into larger CL series
systems. The new Port to Port facility gives CL
Series consoles access to the QL's onboard
I/O, allowing them to be used as external
connections, complete with Auto Gain
Compensation.
Senior Product Specialist from Germany
Sebastian Monch also joined in the
bustle with an on-site demo of Yamaha &
Steinberg's flagship Nuendo 6.5.
Making a fresh debut at the show was Martin
Audio with its Blackline3 loudspeakers – the
FX12 compact and FX15 high-power coaxial
loudspeakers as well as the B18 and B218
subwoofers, which were specifically catered
for the Chinese domestic market.
Now one of the Chinese manufacturing
industry veterans, PR Lighting simply set the
stage with a low-profile 30th anniversary
celebration.
Decked out with a simple placard that read
“Thank you for being with us for the last 30
years” on the back wall of their booth, the
PR Lighting team encouraged long-standing
customers from overseas to help create
a giant photo wall to commemorate the
occasion.
The new product lineup included the XR
1000 series (Spot, Beam, Framing), XR 130
Spot and XRLED 1200 Spot. Among which,
their LED Studio 3305 and Pro Stage LED
Zoom 15-30 picked up the top lighting award
in the 23rd PALM Expo Exhibitors Products
Technology Progress Prize.
The company’s booth remained busy
throughout, with many people congratulating
founder Dave Liang on reaching the
milestone.
Over at the ACE booth, HARMAN’s JBL
Professional's latest VTX series was quite
literally glowing on the show floor, with the
VTX V20 dual 10-inch line array loudspeaker
taking the spotlight.
BRILLIANT.
STUNNING.

EXHIBITION REVIEW
July - August 2014
The V20 features the advanced technology
and extraordinary performance of the
groundbreaking VTX V25 in a smaller
format, high power density 3-way system
complemented by a new suspension system
that provides efficient transport, fast setup
and precise configuration.
d&b audiotechnik's D80 amplifier and xC
series made an impression at the exhibition
as well.
More refined than anything before, the
powerful four channel D80 amplifier sits right
at the very heart of any d&b audiotechnik
system. With sophisticated control
capabilities and the power to efficiently
drive d&b loudspeakers, the comprehensive
management and protection functionalities
are dedicated to mobile or installation
applications.
In face with such economic and market
environment changes, the 2015 trade show
dates will be adjusted accordingly.
Come next year, Palm Expo China is set
to relocate to its original downtown
location in Beijing, and will be split into
two distinct exhibitions – a spring fair for
musical instruments and an autumn fair for
professional lighting and audio.
The fixture features seven independently
controlled modules housed in one moving
fixture, hence creating a multitude of highly
defined beams coming together to form an
amazing array of effects from the incredibly
bold to the ultra subtle.
Back to Basics: Palm Expo China
2015 To Return To Old Fair Grounds
Adamson Systems channeled its “30 years
of thinking inside the box” with an extensive
display of its line arrays and subwoofers. Of
which, the E12/E218 combination proved
to be a crowd favourite - a package that is
ideal for touring and rental houses that need
system flexibility, fast setup/teardown, and
mid-high performance in a 12" line array.
Likewise, EZ Pro was easily a crowd magnet
with its impressive product showcases from
Allen & Heath, EAW, Community and High
End Systems.
EAW especially garnered a lot of hype
surrounding its popular Anya 3-way full range
array module. Anya is a one module solution.
Arrays hang straight and precision coverage
of any venue is controlled completely
through software. No down-fill or long-throw
modules are required.
And of course, the High End Systems'
Shapeshifter was all the rage at the trade
show, dazzling the crowd with its lightningfast effects.
As organizer, China Exhibition Technology
Association (CETA) revealed, China's
economic growth is currently transitioning
at a slow-growing, sedate pace and while
the country remains a vital “producer” and
“consumer” in the performing arts and
entertainment industry, a large portion of the
pie is still in the development stage.
The unprecedented expansion in recent years
has shown a gradual shift from quantity to
quality development where the construction
of cultural facilities has moved from first-tier
cities to second and third-tier cities. Budget
cutbacks in response to the new rounds of
reforms by the government on business and
government-run performances, as well as
public consumption growth.

56 EXHIBITION REVIEW
Exploring, expanding horizons
July - August 2014
By Ram Bhavanashi
PALM Expo – the annual ensemble of India’s pro audio, lighting and music industry – this year turned explorative,
and tuned in more musical initiatives towards setting some new precedents, and perhaps, towards some
benchmarking. Irrespective of number of exhibitors, booths, footfalls, and some inconveniences, the 2014 edition
of PALM Expo scored more positives to carry forward. An ETA report.
The 2014 edition of PALM Expo organized
by Diversified Communications at the
Bombay Exhibition Centre from 29-31 May,
while playing to its regular best, took some
significant directions that appeared to auger
well for the coming editions of the annual
fare.
The event that comprised around 140
exhibitors showcasing over 200 brands –
some of them coming to the market/event
for the first time – and an improved genre of
programming had several new offers for the
participants and close to 20,000 visitors over
three days of conferencing and tradeshow.
Apparently laying more focus on the products
and the technology making them, while the
event had its ‘Innovation Spotlight’ showing
some 15 products from live sound, studio
and music production and lighting domains;
its seminar programming had as its second
session on all the three days a dedicated
‘Product Presentation’ slot aimed at enabling
the manufacturing exhibitors to present
their chosen brand and technology in detail
to the inquisitive audiences. While this had
added a certain value to the discerning visitor
attention, two more striking ‘new features’ at
the PALM 2014 were:
• The PALM Demo Qube
• The PALM DJ Soundscape
Building on last edition’s two new features
– PALM Integration for Entertainment Demo
and PALM Live Rigging & Trussing Experience
– this year’s PALM show introduced the PALM
Demo Qube – a 121-square meter facility
each, created outside Hall No.1, aimed at
facilitating dedicated product and technology
demos in exclusive, custom-designed,
acoustically-treated enclosures where high
dB sound would be permissible, and not
disturbing the main show flow on the floor.
A brainchild of PALM, the Demo Qube was
a huge draw with milling crowds mobbing
outside the two Qubes for their chance to
grab an in-scene sight of the show. The two
Demo Qubes were taken by Hitech Audio and
Yamaha Music who demonstrated their latest
and popular ranges. (See Box: the Demo
Qubes – New Dimension)
The PALM DJ Soundscape sought to play
an effective platform to bring together the
DJ community from across the country, and
enable networking with leading lights of
the industry, sharing their experience and
expertise through insightful seminars and
interactive sessions. Eminent DJs like Shireen
Khan, Vikram Shankar, Akhil & Nikhil Talreja
shed some glowing lights on the hot button
topics of the industry.
While the PALM Open Air Line Array Demo
had its own pull with a good number of
audiences thronging to see what’s latest on
the show and how they work, the regular
Harman Live Arena strode a new direction,
apparently charting a new dimension for the
initiative and the event. In association with
Mumbai’s leading Live Sound production
EXHIBITION REVIEW
July - August 2014
house Sound.com, Harman brought to
its ‘Arena’, Sound.com’s path-breaking
‘gearhouse session’ that sought to promote
‘independent music.’
“That’s been a great draw and inspiration,”
says Prashant Govindan, Harman’s DirectorIndia Operations. “Our purposefully-taken
initiative brought so much variation,
refreshment, and contributed so much to
our commitment to promote independent
musical talent, outside the standard
Bollywood tenet.”
For most regular exhibitors, PALM 2014
event has been a very purposeful and fruitful
platform, for a few newcomers it’s been an
exciting and pleasant event - encouraging
enough to come back again. The positive
dynamic of the event reflected mainly in the
size of the booths growing visibly bigger than
their previous show as also the number of
new launches they did on the show floor.
For one, it appeared like the Distributing
exhibitors competed with the Manufacturing
majors in sizing up their floor spaces- the
most prominent being Hitech Audio,
SunInfonet, Pro-Visual Audio, Acoustic Arts,
Integrated Entertainment Solutions (IES),
Dhanashree Electronics, Rivera International,
Narain, and, of course, the Modern Stage
Service with their band of brands like
Christie, TV-One, Medialon, and SGM.
Says Sushil John, Business Director for SAARC
at QSC Audio: “PALM is the platform for
showcasing products for pro audio business.
We have a wider range of new products and
solutions; so we took larger floor space. This
platform matters to us a lot.” For Neeraj
Chandra, Director at Sun Infonet, “PALM
Expo has pleasantly grown in genre and
infrastructure. That makes one feel good
about showing up every time.”
“PALM is the most important show for
Indian Pro Audio industry, and this year too,
it lived up to its expectations,” said Tushar

PALM Demo Qube: Demoing new opportunities
others, Yamaha, ROBE, Bosch & Hi-Tech.
Thus this year, the PALM organisers
conceptualised the Demo Qube. “In the
process of designing the demo qube along
with the Hongkong company Milton, our
team in a creative impulse realised that the
ideal construction would be a perfect cube
and then the highly successful branding
emerged and we called it the Demo
Qube. Infact PALM with its experience in
acoustics and sound and creating the live
arena and line array contributed majorly
in the design finalisation with the Milton
team,” said Ramesh Chetwani, Exhibition
Director.
The PALM organisers were approached by
leading international technology brands
to provide a solution for demo purposes

require sound. Hall 1, the main exhibit for

“We appreciate greatly the pioneering
effort of Yamaha and Hi-Tech/RCF in
frutifying the demo qube purpose in
providing the visitors an experience of
live demo of new technology,” concluded
Ramesh.
Hi-Tech the Delhi-based audio distributor
who has newly added L-Acoustics and RCF
to its range, understandably demonstrated
the latest from the two European audio
majors. From the audio part, the exhibitor
demoed the K-1 large format WST line
source and LA-Rack systems L-Acoustics;
and the HDL Series, V-Max, and the TTL
Series monitors and floor monitors from
the RCF range. For the mixing part, HiTech
demoed DiGiCo’s SD series of consoles
(SD-9,10, and 11), and most importantly,
the D-2 rack that was actually launched in
Frankfurt recently and brought to India for
the first time.
“It’s pretty exciting to be here; the crowds are
very inquisitive” said Oscar Mora, product
specialist from RCF.
Says Rajan Gupta, Director of HiTech
Audio Systems: “we had over 1500 visitors
thronging at our demo. That’s a great thing to
begin with; it reinforced our belief.”
“The Demo Qube has been like a revelation,”
says Harisha GN, Manager- PA Sales &
Marketing at Yamaha Music (India). “We
knew what we wanted, and we wanted
to know how it works; we guess we had
all that,” he says, adding, “we focused on
explaining to the visitors how to use the
systems, and followed it up with some
training and interactive sessions. That
brought us tremendous response.”
According to him, the Japanese audio major
had adopted a global policy of merging
pro audio solutions with AV and musical
instruments activity and demonstrate a
blend of all that on all platforms. “We just
followed the same line, and demoed a
blend of all that”, explains Harisha.
Accordingly, Yamaha demonstrated their
latest CL Series digital console; DXR Series
for monitors, Nexo Line Arrays and amps
as a combination of pro audio and pro
AV. From musical ranges, it had the DTX
and acoustic bronzes, keyboards and
synthesizers on show.
“It was not just a show of systems; it was
a practical demo of how the systems
work,” explained Harisha. “We mixed our
programming with training, workshop and
interacted sessions to explain how the systems
work, and how to take the best of them.”
This being the first time, it’s been very
exciting for them, and they hope to have
much bigger and more fruitful activity in
the coming editions, conjures the Yamaha
exec.
Harman Brings ‘gearhouse session’ To Its Live Arena
point with popular singer Mihir Joshi
launching his latest album ‘Mumbai Blues’
from the Arena. For Joshi, who is an AKGendorsee, “it was a privilege to launch the
album from the Harman platform.” EhsanLoy, the noted musical duo and Sennheiser
endorsees, were too there to see how the
Live Arean turned out.
Harman Professional India – a regular ‘Live
Arena performer’ at the PALM Expo –
continued its trusted and proven formula this
year but with a twist. The audio major tied
up with Mumbai-based ‘independent’ music
production house, Sound.com to bring the
latter’s popular and fancied music format
‘gearhouse passion’ onto its Live Arena,
value-adding its wide band of musicals.
“The idea, in essence, was to promote
independent music talent that is outside
the standard Bollywood format,” explains
Prashanth Govindan, Harman’s DirectorIndia Operations. “Harman is committed
to encourage independent music
professionals,” he said, adding, “we wanted
to further this commitment to newer
heights this time; we wanted to break away
from the standard format of having just
our endorsees on the stage. Therefore,
we invited independent music performers
from Jazz, Fusion, Metal etc., genres
and created more value to the cause of
independent music.”
While Sound.com had worked with Harman
in 2013 as well, bringing its ‘gearhouse
passion’ has been the new initiative this
year. “Our line-up for artistes performed
on the Live Arena, as part of Harman’s
programming; that was pretty refreshing and
exciting,” says Warren De Souza, Director at
Sound.com.
“Independent music is a great talent;
demonstrating that amongst the famous
and popular music makes it all the more
encouraging for the performers, and
enjoyable for the audience.”
According to him, the gearhouse passion
performances were enthusing enough for
them to come again for the next edition.
The highlight of Harman’s systems demo
on the Arena was, however, the V-25
system. It has been ‘likened, to a Rolls
Royce among the systems in its range.’
An unprecedented number of (25) subwoofers were used in the Live Arena- with
as many as 24 of them being cardioid.
“We did show the V-25 elsewhere; we
spoke a lot about it earlier, but had not
shown it anywhere on a tradeshow,” says
Prashanth. “But we brought it to an Indian
tradeshow for the first time,” he explains,
“the reason being Indian market wasn’t
that mature. Now we felt it’s time we had
it on stage, and we had it to a great result.”
According to Prashanth, it was very pleasing
to watch classical singers like Anuradha Pal
teaming up with Fusion artistes on the Live
Arena stage, and enthrall the capacity crowds.
According to him, the Harman philosophy
is simple: see them on the booth;
understand the specs; experience the
performance on the Live Arena which was
almost completely a Harman affair.
The Harman Live Arena scored yet another

Sennheiser India Leading Global Direction
Three-prong approach to better address market
Evidently, Sennheiser India launched at the
PALM its latest Multipolar pattern studio
microphone- MK 8 and Neumann TLM107
studio microphone besides the AudioControl 12.8 systems from its Belgian audio
partner Apart Audio.
For the Broadcast and music industry,
Sennheiser India launched DJ headphones
– HD-6, 7 and 8 – for the DJs and sound
mixing markets, and for Pro Audio domain,
an upgrade of LSP-500 wireless, selfpowered professional speaker system
aimed at diverse applications. The
company has also demonstrated the 12.8
audio control system from Apart Audio.
Sennheiser India – Indian arm of the
German audio major Sennheiser Electronic
GmbH & Co. KG / Germany – has adopted
a focused approach to better address the
diverse segments of India’s market. With
the market showing distinctly evolving
segments such as pro audio, pro AV, and
broadcast, Sennheiser India intends to
address these segments in a focused
manner.
“We had just two divisions primarily – Pro
Audio and Install Sound divisions – till
2013. From 2014, we reorganized our
focus to address the hugely evolving Indian
market as a three-division approachIntegrated Systems Division; Broadcast
Industry; and (Live) Music and Rental
Industry,” Vipin Pungalia, vice-presidentsales and marketing (professional
segment), told ETA in an exclusive chat
during the PALM EXPO 2014.
“Globally, it is a two-prong approachone is the Integrated Systems Division,
addressing the professional AV market, and
the other is the combination of broadcast,
and music and rental industry,” explained
Vipin. “We, at Sennheiser India, have been
forerunners in addressing the broadcast
and music and rental industry as distinct
segments so, it is a three-prong approach
for us.”
The reason for this decisive initiative has
been the distinctly evolving segments of
Broadcast and Live Music and Rental /
Touring sound domains in the country.
The way these segments have grown in the
recent years, warranted the need to address
them in a dedicated and focused fashion.
While the Broadcast industry has shown
an unprecedented spurt of television and
FM radio channels, Live Music and Rental
industry has vastly expanded to spread into
almost every occasion.
A recent report of the Ministry of Information
and Broadcasting (MIB), shows as many
as 792 television channels have obtained
government permission to beam their
programmes in different States. Similarly,
a recently tabled report of the Telecom
Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said
as many as 839 new FM radio channels
are about to come in the next few months
adding to the already existing close-to-300
channels in the country. All this calls for an
unprecedented demand for quality systems,
and makes a huge potential for any solutions
provider.
The music and rental industry on the other
hand has charted new scales every year, with
every single occasion turning into a musical.
Sennheiser India intends to address this
demand in a methodical and dedicated
manner- which was why the audio major has
a focused display of its systems and solutions
on the PALM EXPO show floor. “PALM is one
of our biggest floors to showcase our systems
and latest solutions,” asserts Vipin. “We take
the event as a platform for launches of latest
products as well as dedicated interactions
with the target audiences.”
For the AV domain (ISD), the company
has launched its Speechline microphone
systems. While these systems have already
been there in global markets, they are
brought to Indian market for the first time.
Complementing the launch of new
systems and solutions, the Sennheiser
India implements an aggressive campaign
of celebrity endorsement as well as
focused initiatives like ‘Sound Impression’
roadshows across the country.
“While artiste-endorsement is a big time
activity for us as it helps us promote the
product by some of the most influential
user communities, programmes like Sound
Impression help us reach the length and
breadth of the industry,” explains the
Sennheiser India VP.
These activities are blended with training
initiatives for all the segments so that
the relevant technologies are understood
by the user communities for a better
experience. “We have been very proactive
in this aspect; the response from the
attendees has been tremendous,” he says,
“that encourages us to do more of such
initiatives.”
PALM Expo has been a very effective and
contributing platform for Sennheiser
India’s approach to market, asserts Vipin.
“It’s been a very rewarding association all
through,” he says, “we will continue to do
it in the years to come.”

Christie Delivers Stunning Projection Mapping Show
Christie and its partners, Modern Stage
Service, Video Design and Audio Design
joined forces once again to showcase a live
demonstration of projection mapping on
the exhibition grounds.
The seven-minute projection mapping
performance titled, “An Immersive
Stereoscopic 3D Augmented Reality
Experience With Live Interaction” is
conceptualized, designed and executed by
award-winning projection designer Bart
Kresa and his team from BARTKRESA design
Inc. This was the first time in the world that
a projection mapping performance has
been accomplished with a combination of
live choreographed dancing, utilizing both
traditional and stereoscopic projectors to
achieve an augmented theatrical setting.
Eye-catching visuals were mapped on
multiple surfaces and a projected dome
structure using the Christie Roadster
HD10K-M, Christie Roadster HD20K-J
3-chip DLP projectors and Christie G Series
1-chip DLP projectors.
Equipped with DLP technology, highquality optics and 10-bit image processing,
the Christie Roadster Series utilize light
efficiently to ensure brightness uniformity
throughout the images that are projected
onto irregularly-shaped “screens” such
as buildings, interior spaces and natural
landscapes. Embedded with Christie
Twist™, the projectors allow users to
expertly edge-blend and warp multiple
curved images seamlessly to almost
any projection surface – flat, curved or
spherical. Coupled with other benefits such
as low cost of operation and ease of use,
the Christie Roadster Series is undoubtedly
the de facto standard for rental/staging.
Offering unsurpassed value and a
perfect fit for a variety of applications,
the Christie G Series projectors provide
excellent image quality and reliability.
Ideal for 24/7 operation, the filter-free,
dust-sealed design prevents dust and dirt
from affecting the projector, ensuring that
image quality is preserved and maintenance
costs are minimal. The Christie G Series is
packed with ProAV features, including three
resolution options, built-in color matching
for a more uniform image in a multiprojector configuration, as well as blending
and warping capabilities to handle curved
surfaces.
“We are very excited to work with Modern
Stage Service, Video Design, Audio Design
and Bart Kresa once again following our
very successful collaboration during last
year’s Palm Expo,” said Rajesh Patkar,
deputy general manager, Christie India.
“This time, the projection mapping is
performed at our booth on multiple surfaces
and a dome-shaped structure to present a
dynamic visual display of 2D and 3D images
that can transform what is reality for the
audience into illusions and images of infinite
possibilities.”
In India, Christie has worked with Modern
Stage Service and Video Design, as well as
Kresa respectively on various occasions.
Modern Stage Service and Video Design
were involved in the creation of a stunning
multimedia show using projection mapping
at the Old Fort in New Delhi, while Kresa
designed and executed a brilliant projection
mapping performance on the facades
of Jodphur’s renowned Umaid Bhawan
Palace by transforming it into an impressive
showcase of one-of-a-kind environment.
In addition, Christie’s projectors were also
used by Kresa to deliver an engaging visual
spectacle during the opening ceremony of
the Lusofonia Games held in Goa earlier this
year.
“Palm Expo is one of the most
comprehensive audiovisual and live
entertainment sector trade shows held
in India and we’re pleased to be here to
create and deliver a unique projection
mapping show that not only offers a
fascinating kaleidoscope of India’s rich
culture, but also showcase how advanced
visual technology can be used to wow and
boggle the minds of audiences,” said Kresa.
“Projection mapping is quickly becoming
a widely-requested communication
experience used to complement large
events and destinations for entertainment
and other purposes,” added Davinder
Wadhwa, director, Modern Stage Service.
“Through our joint exhibit with Christie
at Palm Expo, we’re able to reach out to
broadcasting, event, post-production and
stage specialists in India and provide them
with better appreciation of the power of
projection mapping and how it can add
value to their events and installations.”
“Palm Expo has grown to become one of
the most anticipated events for the most
talented and creative individuals from
India’s broadcast, event, postproduction
and stage industries to come together and
share their ideas and experiences,” added
Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific.
“As a regular exhibitor at this event, we’re
proud and thrilled to be able to showcase
our cutting edge projection solutions that
leading rental stagers can confidently
invest in for their reliability and unmatched
features.”

We Asked, You Answered!
What's swirling 'round in the world of sound? From around the globe, different Sound
Engineers sound off on the latest trends in audio today
“My priority and passion lies in mixing for bands. For me, the most important aspect in
any system is its power. The system that I require must be good and powerful, not just
loud. And it has to have a lot of headroom. Similarly, it doesn't matter to me whether
its a digital or analogue console, brands like Yamaha, Digi Design and Midas are all good
choices. When I am called upon to mix a system for a band, I don't want to play loud but
I need the power. It must have the punch.. I'm talking about nice and warm BIG sound.”
-John Rock, Singapore
“I still think more than anything, the trend is digital mixing consoles. Be they, small or
large format. If I was sitting here 10 years ago and we mentioned the word digital mixing
desks, I could leave it as a passing phrase because we still used analogue. But today,
everything is digital consoles. And the manufacturers know it, they are all trying to stay
one step ahead of their competitors. We've been very lucky to be part of this change
and development and we're very happy. Having said that, we've got 2 brands that we
use now, DiGico and Soundcraft. CADAC and SSL that have come up with very good 'live'
mixing consoles. So I still think that the digital mixing console is an area that is still moving
forward.”
- Robin Shuttleworth, Singapore
“Actually the important thing for me is the technology of a machine. Working in a theatre
with Arabic instruments, equipment like the microphones have to cater to these uniquesounding instruments. I only want to work with high-end instruments and microphones
because these ensure power. It doesn't matter if it is a dynamic mic or condenser mic, as
long as it has a good response and gives me good and real sound quality. For this, I usually
look to brands like Shure and Neumann as they are some of the best brands in the world.
For speakers, we try to only use speakers with high SPL. In a venue, when you have 10
speakers and only need to use 4 because they have such high SPL, that is always good. It
is also good for touring because you can cover a very big area with less speakers and they
won't reach their peak so easily. For me, I prefer to use L-Acoustics, MeyerSound and Nexo
speakers.”
- Habib Al Srouji, United Arab Emirates

“I would say the Avid S3L system and the QSC Touch Mix are the hottest trends in Audio
today, especially in Myanmar. They are the most compact and appropriate professional
audio gears for both broadcasting and entertainment industries. While the Avid S3L system
can share I/O across 2 or more systems as well as it can control Pro-Tools and other DAWs
with its control surface, the QSC Touch Mix can mix and edit parameters with the iPad
via Wi-Fi. According to the continuous development of Audio technology, consumers are
looking for the better quality, cost-effective, less-burden and secure products. The more the
manufacturers comfort the consumers, the more they are achieving.”
- Saw Frits Fredrick Kyaw, Myanmar
“One of the most promising trends in the audio sector has been the emergence of digital audio
networking. Traditional analogue distribution systems are plagued by an inherent complexity i.e.
the logical and physical connections are one in the same. This means that building complex and
flexible audio distribution systems is expensive and difficult. Digital audio networks do away
with these challenges by instead leveraging off-the-shelf Ethernet switches and cabling which
could mean utilizing the existing network which is already being used for control, data transfer,
etc.
Another area of interest is in step arrays or steerable arrays. In this configuration, the speakers
are flown vertically, but each unit has the ability to be tilted completely independentlyhence the name 'step array'. This enables a wave front that has the desired curvature from
a perfectly vertical cluster. Because of the minimal cluster volume this configuration offers
maximum freedom on where it is hoisted.
Step arrays are typically designed such that they can be connected quickly to create longer clusters. For example, with the
K-Array KH8 step array, a 12-unit cluster can be hoisted by a single person in under 10 minutes. The range of applications
for step arrays are numerous. Because of their ability to blend into the surrounding and since they can operate in
venues that are highly reverberant, Step Arrays are ideal for deployment in places like houses of worship, transportation
terminals etc.”
- Dave Wooster, United Kingdom
“Show control and show control interfaces are really picking up. It’s not really just a sound
thing but it integrates sound, lighting, video and everything else, into a full show. Getting
things synced up to trigger on cue without human error is a big deal. Everything is already
pretty much digital so getting all these various systems to natively work together in a
simple intuitive way would be the next biggest thing.”
- K Shyam, Singapore

MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE
July - August 2014
Robin Shuttleworth: ‘Family and Business
Don’t Mix’
From Rock n Roll touring to Beethoven's Fidelio to recording studios to the Head of Sound at the Esplanade in
Singapore, Robin Shuttleworth is an industry veteran at his peak. Elissa Nadine meets him.
When you meet Robin Shuttleworth, there is
no immediate sign that this is the man who
was largely responsible for starting the audio
division in one of Singapore's most iconic
landmarks. In a quiet cafe, away from the
hustle and bustle of the city, the 61-year-old
veteran is dressed comfortably in a knitted
sweater and jeans. Sitting comfortably and
speaking with enthusiastic gestures, he
comes across as the kind of boss you would
want to work for – inspirational, confident
and relaxed at all the same time.
Moving to Singapore from South
Africa to pioneer something as large
as the Esplanade must have been
a big decision for you in 2000. How
have you adjusted over the years?
The entertainment industry is international;
it is surprising to see who you have worked
with and bump into as time goes on. You've
got to remember, when I first started,
there was no such industry known as the
'Sound' industry. The term for us was
'Roadies’. We were people that gravitated
to this new industry of performance and
we did everything, from cleaning the stage
to hanging the lights to putting up some
loudspeakers and microphones. So there
was no industry at all, it was just a passion
that was driving you. You either played an
instrument or were part of the technical
team.
From that, the whole industry started to
develop very quickly with the advent of
sound equipment. When I first started,
there was no such thing as a mixing desk.
There was just an amplifier with a couple
of controls. So I saw this whole industry
develop and now there isn't an area in the
professional audio industry that I haven't had
first-hand experience. Consequently, when
I came here, these strengths were seen as a
good measure of somebody that could assist
and help this place get going.
Where does your passion for audio
come from?
The passion comes from my family, I come
from a very artistic family. My mother was
an artist, my grandfather was an artist and
musician and so was my grandmother. So it
was obviously going to carry on. But my wife
is not in this industry at all and she never
will be. That's possibly what has kept our
marriage so strong over the years. We are
able to achieve a counter balance - when
I work. When I'm at home, I have other
interests.
So family and business do not meld?
Family and business don't mix. I believe in
a clear divide and I've been married since
1977.
MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE
July - August 2014
That's very rare in this industry, a lot
of the times, its a family thing.
And also a lot of the time, relationships don't
really last because you're on the road an
awful long time, you're away from your loved
one and it doesn't really last. It is a rarity. I
think I just put it to the fact that I've been
able to divide my life into 2. When I put my
working cap on, I'm working but when I'm
at home, I'm really at home. I take what I do
very, very seriously and my relationship is
also very serious and that's just who I am.
Do you apply that same principle to
work?
I use the same sort of philosophy for the
people I work with. Just do it, have that
clear divide, the Yin and the Yang. This is
such a creative industry, particularly in the
audio aspect, that you can get into such a
headspace and it just takes you away and
it turns you into a very different person. It
can change your whole peripheral causing
you to just focus on what you're doing and
you tend to lose sense of reality and get
lost in it. But that's just my philosophy, I do
know several people who can and have been
fortunate enough to mix the two but most of
my friends and people in the industry don't
experience it.
What kind of approach do you take
when it comes to staff and jobs on a
day to day basis?
I always try my utmost to make calls to all the
venues where we are working at, to look and
observe so that any encouragement and or
improvement can be given. Wherever you are
in the world, people are somewhat different.
Some people will have a natural attribute to
do one thing and some will have strengths
in other areas. What I found here was that
there was an incredible pride in a way. People
were willing to go that extra mile to learn and
work.
When we started here at the Esplanade,
nobody really had any first-hand experience
of doing shows. We started off together all on
even footing and we slowly started building
ourselves up. Realising where our strengths
and weaknesses were, how our passions
could lead us to improvement. That was a
consistent thing that I found over here. Here,
I've got people who are really dedicated and
passionate and that's how I find it different.
We've got a bunch of people who have stuck
together through thick and thin and I think
we've done it really well.
It makes me really proud to know I could pick
a group of my people here and I could tackle
any show anywhere in the world. I mean it.
79
What is the main challenge you see
when it comes to managing a team
in such a niche industry?
After all these years, what would
you consider to be your biggest
career accomplishment?
A lot of the time, we work hand in hand
and alongside touring engineers so there's
a yardstick. There's a tangible level for us to
measure our skill against and testimony to
this is that all our competitors want to pinch
our staff. To meet these challenges, we've
gone into a very aggressive training program.
We train 12 people every year to become
either sound, lighting or staging technicians.
That is how we maintain our standards when
our competitors pinch our people, otherwise
we'd have to close the doors. This is the
reality and its not uncommon. Fortunately
the people who stayed are the people that I
never wanted to lose in the first place.
I've got to go back to sole purpose of being
here. When I came here my job wasn't to
sit behind a mixing desk and do what I had
done for so many years. My job was to get
somebody else to be able to do that, to
take a group of inexperienced people and
set them at an international level. I was at
an international level and that has been
our yardstick. Basically I want them to be
their best. So my biggest accomplishment
is to see this group of people that had no
experience whatsoever at running major
shows, doesn't matter what genre, and do
it at an international standard. And as I've
said, I've got an awful lot of people that I'm
immensely fond of and proud of because
they've achieved that goal.
How do you motivate your staff?
Allow them ownership, give plenty of
encouragement and let them know how to
improve themselves. I try and be seen with
my department as much as I possibly, so it
doesn't become an 'Us' or 'Them' situation.
I have an assistant, and my philosophy is
that WE service our technicians. We're not
the type that sit in an ivory tower, it's our
jobs are to make our technicians lives easy. If
they have a problem, we've got to solve that
problem. It could be anything from staffing
issues to not having the right equipment.
The way I see it is – the technicians are doing
the shows that please our performers. If our
performers are pleased, then our audience
is pleased and if our audience are pleased,
they come back and they see more shows.
The priority is the shows and how good we
can put those shows on so more people can
come and enjoy. After all people they pay
money for the tickets are the
ones who pay our salary. We
are artistic people so we are
all temperamental. No two
people have the exact same
way of achieving things, and
no two people can fully get
on but its that careful juggling
acts to keep the team going
forward.
Do you have a personal
motto that you can
attribute all this success
to?
Always be willing and able,
whilst being pleasant with
everyone you have to work
with no matter how difficult
the task may be.
“In all the years that I
have worked for theatre
organisations, we have
had a very low staff turn
over. It’s also lovely to
see technicians who join
with very little experience
‘blossom’ into first grade
sound technicians and work
all over the world.”
The image of Shuttleworth, the welltravelled veteran, watching over his team as
a proud leader is strangely easy to visualise.

coolux & Barco Amaze Visitors with
'Acoustical Visions & Desert Soundings'
I
nternationally acclaimed artist and
composer, Bill Fontana recently revealed
site specific sound sculptures as part
of the Abu Dhabi Music Festival. Held at
Emirates Palace Hotel for an entire month,
the exhibition consisted of works that had
been built specifically to cater to the natural
surroundings of the area.
Having been commissioned to create two
sound sculptures, in addition to exhibiting
additional works of his, Bill Fontana chose
the Sheikh Zayed bridge and the Abu
Dhabi desert itself as the main focus of his
work entitled, 'Acoustical Visions & Desert
Soundings'.
Fontana explained this choice by referring to
the nature of the undiscovered sounds which
these polar opposites have in common.
The visual installations and sound sculptures
were presented using the latest audio visual
technology, including 9 units of the new
coolux Pandoras Box Compact Player, which
were provided by TechnoPro llc, the official
coolux distributor in the Middle East.
A total of nine DVI Outputs had to be taken
care of for the realisation of the demanding
project. The Compact Players had to play out
media to 6 x Barco RLM-W8 projectors and 3
x 50” LCD Monitors.
Each of the compact players was running
independently and was able to provide
smooth playback for looping QuickTime MOV
files, with file sizes ranging from 70GB - 90GB
each. The audio tracks were taken from each
Compact Player and were then used for
further sound processing.
A laptop running VNC Remote was used
to remotely monitor the status of the nine
Compact Players off-site.
The client was very satisfied with the over-all
performance of the technical setup and the
new Compact Players in particular, which
delivered smooth playback 24/7, for a
duration of 30 days.
Organized by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts
Foundation, the Abu Dhabi Music Festival
celebrates Abu Dhabi as a place of tolerance,
respect and enlightenment. It seeks to reflect
the determination of the capital to take the
lead in cultural understanding and in so
doing, endeavors to reflect the vision for the
future of Abu Dhabi as an international hub
for the arts.

Working together with some of the UAE
capital's young artistic talents for up to six
months, he mentored and helped the young
artists to create unique soundscapes that
reflected powerful symbols and different
sides of Abu Dhabi.
The Festival also commissioned renowned
local artist Mohammed Kazem to present
his latest conceptual work, in addition to
allowing the winner of the first Gulf Capital
Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts award, Moza
Obaid Al Suwaidi, to show creations that
focused on the symbol of the palm tree.

THAILAND
Luxurious Thai Villa Welcomes New Audio
with Genelec & Symetrix
N
estled in the hills of Phuket
overlooking the bay along Surin
Beach, lies that Ayara Villa that
beckons those who desire luxury, serenity
and unrivalled Thai graciousness.
To ensure the best possible audio quality,
the Villa's owner called upon the expertise
of Finnish Sound Designer, Jukka Kaven to
oversee the project together with Bangkokbased distributors, Fuzion Far East.
Kaven shared that the only guidelines given
were for a ''good quality audio system
that was powerful enough to avoid renting
additional equipment for private functions
in villa and while maintaining aesthetics that
were concurrent with the Nikki Beach brand,
i.e. be as low profile as possible.''
Other than some systems being delayed,
the location of the villas proved to be one of
the most challenging aspects of the overall
project.
“Given that the villa is right on the beach, we
considered using certain fully weatherproof
brands but found that there were none
that we could recommend in terms of
performance. Ultimately we agreed that all
speakers would be installed with as much
protection from the elements as possible for
example, under roof overhangs or canopies,”
he explained.
Meeting all their criteria in terms of sonic
quality and characteristics was the wellknown Genelec brand. Kaven and the team
decided on a total of 10 x Genelec 8030B
Bi-Amplified Loudspeakers together with
10 x 8010A two-way active monitors. The
main system is complemented by a single
7050B Active Subwoofer with all speakers
being spread across 8 'zones' in the villa
that include the Living Room, Dining Room,
Kitchen, Foyer, Swimming Pool, Swimming
Pool Bar and Outdoor Dining areas.
“For this project I wanted to use Genelec
because of its natural sound and because
it is an active speaker. Its new user friendly
feature to bypass the speaker when no
signal is coming, and to be able to work
immediately when signal comes again is an
excellent and important function. Genelec is
for me naturally the only reference speaker
for recorded audio, even my home audio is
reproduced with Genelec speakers. To me,
this Finnish worldwide reference studio
monitor speaker doesn’t need a lot marketing
speeches. Everyone in this industry knows
name Genelec!,” said Kaven.
For control of the system, a Symetrix Radius
12 x 8 processor is being used. Radius 12×8,
is a Dante-networkable, fixed I/O, openarchitecture digital signal processor that
can be installed as a standalone processor
or used in conjunction with SymNet Edge or
third party Dante network-enabled devices.
“Symetrix has great wireless control
possibilities, which was also very important
for the villa. And what is so great that you
don’t need any special application, with
Symetrix you have direct control from any
mobile device, which has an internet access.
The heart of the system is Symetrix Radius
controller, which I chose after comparing it
live with some other brands. It is an excellent
piece of hardware combined together with
one of the most flexible design softwares,”
remarked Kaven.
With a happy and satisfied customer, Kaven's
only worry is that now, the villa owner may
need to change nearly all his music files.
“Before MP3 music didn’t sound so bad
coming from the old system, but now with
Symetrix and Genelec nobody wants to listen
to any more MP3 music!”

RTS Streamlines Comms for the Performing Arts
Since its opening in 2012 in Busan, South
Korea's second largest metropolis after
Seoul, with a population of approximately
3.6 million, Sohyang Arts Centre has
become the most technologically advanced
performing arts and musical venue. With all
the attention it was receiving, The Sohyang
Arts Centre team recognised the need for a
clear and efficient communication system to
streamline operations and execute glitch-free
performances.
During the early stages of implementing the
communication system, the team envisioned
an intercom system that would be flexible
and through which they’d be able to easily
reassign communication groups without the
need for re-wiring.
With that goal in mind, Bosch focused on
customizing a unique solution that would
meet their needs. The proposal included
four unique products: the RTS ZEUS III
digital matrix system, a 32-channel intercom
matrix where each channel can be used to
connect to a keypanel or 4W audio (audio IN/
OUT). The unit comes with two completely
independent power supplies powered from
separate AC feeds and a USB port is used for
system configuration using AZedit Intercom
software.
Along with the RTS ZEUS III digital matrix
system, DKP-16 CLD and DKP-8LK key panels,
a SAP1626 source assign panel, and a BTR700 wireless intercom system were proposed.
All were approved and with the RTS
solution installed, it was now easy to assign
communication groups to different operation
teams and link all the communication groups
together when required, via the wireless
intercom system.
The different functions of each component
brought to life the ideal intercom system
that Sohyang Arts Centre requested, working
within their budget. Not only is the new
intercom system more efficient, it easily
switches from one communication group
to another with top-notch audio quality,
improving the running of operations during
events tremendously.
In September 2006, RTS became a part of
The Bosch Group. The acquisition brings
the Bosch quality standards to RTS through
streamlined and modernized processes, as
well as a renewed commitment to research
and development.

Martin Audio Raises the Heat in Hanoi
W
ith its new Martin Audio sound
system, Nineteen Club in Hanoi,
Vietnam has set a high standard
for other clubs to emulate.
VIETNAM
Situated right in the centre of the Vietnamese
capital, it has been considered one of Hanoi’s
hottest clubs for EDM music. With a mixture
of local and worldwide talents gracing the
stage, Nineteen Club creates some of the
best vibes in the city.
Venue owner, Vu Anh Phong, first
decided to visit Ho Chi Minh city in
the south, in order to learn the reason
behind the phenomenal success of
some of the city's more famous clubs.
He noticed that a common factor
was Martin Audio sound systems that
appeared to attract a clientele seeking
a higher grade of entertainment. “The
fact that Martin Audio contributes to
these clubs’ dramatic success, with the
considerable number of guests visiting
every night, was evident,” he said.

Vu Anh Phong contacted Pham Duy Duc,
director of well known club integrators,
Duc Proaudio Company, who provided a
proposal, basing his design on Martin Audio
components for Nineteen Club. It was no
surprise that Phong decided immediately to
overhaul the entire existing sound system,
deploying this solution instead.
Complementing the main audio are 8 x S218+
subwoofers, that have been designed to be
used with large scale Blackline F12+ and F15+
systems to extend and increase the total low
frequency output power. It can also be used
as the low frequency section of a bi-amped
or tri-amped H3+ system.
The new system comprises of 14 x high
power Blackline F15+ full range loudspeakers.
Control is via amplifiers consisting of 4 x
MA5.2K, 4 x MA3.0 with a DX1.5 dedicated
digital signal processor.
After five days of installation, Nineteen
Club readily unveiled its new audio
system to a 500 strong crowd, knowing
that it would raise the temperature.
“I am absolutely satisfied with my
decision to upgrade the sound system
and can now feel the true power of
Martin Audio,” concluded Phong.

K-array Elegance Featured in Sennheiser
Shanghai Concert Hall
CHINA
K
-array continues to develop its strong
connection with music around
the world, driven entirely by its
passionate founders and team of sound
technology enthusiasts. Sennheiser China
who represents K-array in China has recently
partnered with the Shanghai Concert Hall,
the temple of symphonic music in China
which was recently been re-built and reassembled just meters away from it’s original
location displaying a ‘striking neo-classical
30’s style’ for hosting and promoting classical
music even Jazz.
The Shanghai Concert Hall has an incredibly
rich history carrying a symbolic value for the
culture of Shanghai. Today the hall continues
to host many great events and spectacles
embracing the future of generations of music
to come and inspiring the city.
In the new partnership, Sennheiser China
installed a full set of top theatre and sound
equipment, they also designed a state of
the art centralised audio recording control
system including the cutting-edge media
recovery microphone (the world renowned
wireless 9000 series).
For the diffusion, K-array was used; in
particular, nine white KP102’s were installed
on each side embedded into the architecture
of the room (which has more than 1,000
seats on two levels reaching 9 meters high).
For the low frequencies, two KMT18P parts
were positioned, while the front-fill was
created with a KP102 and a KMT18P.
Ziqian Chen, Technical Manager at Sennheiser
commented, "The K-array speakers are so
thin and elegant, they are perfectly placed
in the environment, hidden and not so
obtrusive to the eye. They are much better
than the 'black boxes' that were there before.
The sound is great and delivers consistent
quality in a demanding environment such as
this." This facility is used for the performance
of singers and jazz ensemble (not the classical
performances) and for all announcements
and presentations so it must support speech
and music to perfection. The Concert Hall
has also set up a team to manage the
new equipment with training from both
Sennheiser China and K-array to get the best
results from the equipment.
The official ceremony for the new beginning
of this great hall which has been re-named
Sennheiser Shanghai Concert Hall, was
officiated by Daniel Sennheiser, Sennheiser
CEO with his brother Andreas, Marc Vincent,
president of Sennheiser Greater China and
Hong Kong, Zhang Zhe, president of Shanghai
Grand Theatre Arts Center and Zhang Ming,
general manager of the Shanghai Concert
Hall.
"We are proud and honoured by the
opportunity to join forces with the
prestigious Shanghai Concert Hall, to
promote the music and culture of sound
in China," said Marc Vincent during the
ceremony.
This was echoed by Zhang Zhe, president of
the Shanghai Grand Theatre Arts Center: "We
are delighted that the Shanghai Concert Hall
and Sennheiser have reached this incredible
collaboration at the beginning of the second
decade after moving to the new venue. The
opportunity to join forces with Sennhseiser
offers many development opportunities for
the future of the concert hall. We believe
that this partnership will have a great impact
on the development of the musical culture in
Shanghai."

utline’s Indonesian distributor
recently supplied to Surabaya’s
Ciputra World mall for its new fourthfloor ballroom.
Surabaya’s Ciputra World mall is a unique
blend of award-winning design, leisure,
entertainment, retail and hospitality. As both
an innovative retail and leisure destination in
Indonesia, the mall spoils its customers from
the moment they arrive, from architectural
taste and function to every single amenity.
Catering to its need for 'only the best', an
Outline Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. line array was
recently installed in the mall's new fourthfloor ballroom. Supplying the equipment
to 'Ballroom 89' was Outline's Indonesian
distributor, Melodia Sound & Lighting
Systems.
The PA system, which is self-powered and
driven by Outline’s iMode technology,
comprises of 12 x Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. iMode
elements and 4 x DBS 18-2 iMode SP
subwoofers, and covers an area of 700 sqm
that has rather problematic acoustics.
He explained: “The first reason that led
my client to choose Outline rather than
the valid competitors was the ‘adjustable
directivity factor’. I think that in the sound
reinforcement sector there is no field of
application in which this special ‘ability’
doesn’t ensure dramatic benefits to the
sound’s quality. Secondly, the system’s
response at Ballroom 89 makes vocals more
crystal clear, warm and ‘in the face’ - even in
the last row of seats - than I've ever heard
before."
The COMpact Polar Adjustable Sound System
(Mini-COM.P.A.S.S.) is a self-powered, biamped line array. Its two 1.75” compression
drivers and four 5” mid-woofers deliver a
peak SPL of 141 dB at one metre with four
enclosures. The cabinets provide a frequency
range of from 100 to 20,000 Hz. As its name
suggests, its dimensions are compact, in spite
of containing six transducers and the units,
including flying hardware, weigh in at 23 kg
(50 lb).
Almost a decade after winning a Plasa Award
for Product Innovation (among the best-
known pro audio manufacturers), the MiniCOM.P.A.S.S. is in fact still the world’s only
compact line-source system offering up to
sixteen user-definable choices of symmetrical
and asymmetrical horizontal dispersion.
Furthermore, real-time control is available via
iPad/iPhone App (link).
Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. is equipped with a pair
of Outline's Double Parabolic Reflective
Wave Guides (D.P.R.W.G.), a technology
Outline first patented for its Butterfly linesource elements. Thanks to the adjustable
horizontal directivity, the coverage angle can
be set between 60 to 150 degrees in steps
of 15°, offering sixteen combinations of
horizontal coverage (including asymmetrical
ones) to direct sonic energy where needed.
The movable Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. "wings"
help users avoid wall reflections and make
other changes to coverage. Built-in sensors
inform iMode's DSP as to the positions of
each cabinet's wings, allowing automatic
corrections to on-axis response.
www.outlineimode.com
It was the key feature of the MiniCOM.P.A.S.S. system - enabling users to direct
the sound exactly where they want it – that
was the deciding factor in this case.
"The Ballroom 89 management chose this
system after taking products by two famous
brands into consideration”, commented Rudy
Winarto, Owner and MD of Melodia Sound
and Light.

rganised by the Ministry of Youth
and Sport/Kementerian Belia dan
Sukan, the Festival Belia Putrajaya
(Putrajaya Youth Festival) 2014 is an annual
event in Malaysia that aims to showcase the
collective talent of the country's youths and
spark inspiration in them through various
workshops, activities, and events.
It also serves as a springboard to inspire
youths around the country to dream bigger
and to put their ideas into motion via music
and activities.
While most of the show is pitched, planned
and executed by youths working together,
the main stage of the show is always done
professionally. Running that very stage of
the event and supplying all equipment were
technical specialists, EHQ Projects. The KLbased production company ran the largest
of the 3 stages throughout the entire festival
and brought the entire festival to life together
with the help of consultants, Freeform Sdn
Bhd / We Parachute.
Held at the Persiaran Perdana, the longest
boulevard in Putrajaya, Malaysia, the freeentry event was open to all ages and planned
to entertain up to 30,000 people. Knowing
that the equipment used had to match up to
the standards of the well-known festival, the
team followed the technical riders provided
to a T.
Overseeing the entire team was EHQ's
Technical Director, Jay Neil together with
partner-in-crime, Andrew Warren, EHQ FOH
Engineer/Production Manager. “The brands
used were chosen because they were able to
help us deliver and meet the requirements of
the riders sent to us, “commented Jay.
While many Molefays and flood-lights were
used, the stage and surrounding areas really
came alive when big name brands such as
Clay Paky and Martin Professional showed off
the power of their luminaires. In total, 24 x
Martin Professional Mac 2000 Spot
, 24 x Mac 2000 Wash and 16 x Martin
Atomic 3kw Strobes were used.
All were complemented by the fixtures that
seem to be in every show in Asia - the Clay

fixture were used adding their own touch
of PIZAZZ to the show. The Sharpy has been

Having done countless touring gigs in the
past 12 years since the companies inception,
EHQ Projects pulled off yet another event
without a hitch. But the best feedback of the

festival.
Held from 23 May - 9 June 2014, Vivid
Sydney is a unique celebration of light, music
and ideas that transformed the centre of
New South Wales’ vibrant capital with a
series of state-of-the-art visual and creative
art installations. The team provided events
agency, Destination NSW, with the core
technology and services for the festival for
the 3rd year in a row.
“This is our third year of working with
Destination NSW on Vivid Sydney, providing
a huge range of technologies including 3D
media servers, 3D mapping, video projection
equipment, projection tower infrastructure
and sound installations, not to mention
our highly skilled crews to manage the
technology,” commented Kain Jones, Special
Projects Manager at TDC. “We have used
our experience of working on Vivid Sydney
for the last three years to apply the insights
learned on how to adapt and continue to
make sure that all elements TDC are involved
in are amazing.
“As Vivid Sydney grows, new buildings
and locations are added, so initially we

spent considerable time analysing which
technology was best-aligned to meet the
artists’ vision. We got involved from the
outset in installation design, mapping the
buildings to enable the designers to create
content specific to the outline of those
buildings. We then worked on optimal
locations for projector placement, media
server selection, lens selection and the
number of projectors required to meet
specific brightness (lux) output for each
installation.”
“Vivid Sydney is a great challenge for our
company, the scale of this event is enormous
in regard to projection technology required
to bring it all together,” commented Michael
Hassett, TDC’s Managing Director.
Helping to bring the show to life, Pandoras
Box media servers by coolux were utilised
along with Dataton WATCHOUT multi-image
display and presentation software.
“This year over 50 x Barco projectors
were deployed, ranging from the brightest
projector in the world, the HDQ-2K40 (40,000
lumens brightness) to the Barco HDF-W26
(22,000 lumens brightness) and FLM-R22+
(22,000 lumens brightness) projectors.
This is a projection technology feat and
not something that any company globally
could pull together easily. We’re proud to
be working with the great team at that
Destination NSW again this year, and we look
forward to the continued success of Vivid
Sydney.”
And the last word went to Olin Winton,
Technical Manager at TDC who said: “It’s
always a joy to work on large format
projection projects and Vivid Sydney is no
exception. The opportunity to display images
on iconic buildings takes months of planning
and long nights of alignment. This year we
have added several new projects to our list,
which we are extremely pleased with. Seeing
it all come together, working with world

of people interacting with the buildings is
extremely rewarding.”

PR Lighting Chosen for Yanni in Colombo

“We recommended the PR Lighting pieces
because of their excellent feature-set,” said
Faizal Hussain.
s Sri Lanka’s premier sound and
lighting provider, MOS Sound & Light
recently provided full production
services for a major concert by Greek
composer/keyboardist Yanni. To create
seamless stage dynamics, the team used
fixtures from their PR Lighting inventory.
Reviewing the event afterwards, he added,
“The show was amazing, and enjoyed by
all the audience. The quality of the lighting
production was excellent reaching the
highest international standards. Overall it was
a great success.”
The company began purchasing from the
Chinese manufacturer in 2009 and has had a
solid relationship ever since. MOS Director,
Hussain Faizal explained, “We like the quality
and price of the products, with features
similar to the top European brands. We also
always receive great after sales service and a
quick response to any questions.”
The company was contracted by event
management companies, AKG Events and
Amuseum Special Events, in addition to
Wizcraft Colombo. They were tasked to
provide a technical infrastructure (including
rigging) for the 4000 fans who attended
the Yanni show at the Sugadathasa Indoor
Stadium. For this, they dipped heavily into
their PR Lighting hire fleet which includes 28
x XL 1200 Spot, 12 x XL 1200 Wash, 5 x Mega
Colour search lights and 8 x Century Colour
2500.
The local press also provided extensive
coverage, praising the excellent standard of
production.

Lighting designer Bud Horowitz, who also
controlled the lighting for the concert, was
assisted by Hussain Faizal.
Large quantities of the XL Wash and XL Spot
were distributed on the overhead truss — at
back, centre and right of the stage — as well
as using further heads for floor effects (left
and right) — with infills from the truss bar.
The show was highlighted by a cornucopia
of colour cues — Blue, Red, Amber and
Magenta — to highlight the artist.

recently joined forces with established
local multimedia artist Brain Gothong
Tan for the TheatreWorks’ Sublime Monsters
and Virtual Children Performance and
Exhibition in Singapore. The partnership saw
the extensive and creative usage of various
Epson projectors as part of a contemporary
performance that combined film, theatre and
performance art within an installation.
The performance aimed to explore how
public and personal rituals can shape and
transform experiences and perceptions.
The collaboration was part of Epson
Singapore’s on-going efforts to challenge
traditional boundaries in projection beyond
conventional usage by showcasing creative
applications of its award-winning projectors.
As the official Projector Sponsor, Epson
ensured that the magic of projection
technology was experienced right from the
moment guests stepped in to the venue.
Guests were treated to a seamless panoramic
image of the play’s characters walking in
single file via edge blending projection with 2
x Epson’s EB-Z8350 projectors.
Also available on the opening day of the
performance was the Epson EB-595Wi, the
World’s First 3LCD Hand Touch Enabled
Interactive Projector. Placed prominently at
the entrance, guests were able to use their
fingers to sign off their greetings and wellwishes freely on a whiteboard. Its hand-touch
interactivity allowed users to draw, annotate
and interact instantly with the content on the
projector screen.
A variety of Epson’s business projectors were
also used for the roving screen projections
in the performance halls as part of the
dance performances. These included the

HONG KONG
Robben Ford Sounds Spectacular Thanks
To DPA
A
merican blues, jazz and rock guitarist
Robben Ford delivered an outstanding
live performance when he and his
band played Shatin Town Hall Auditorium in
Hong Kong recently.
The sound quality was enhanced by the use
of DPA microphones, a selection of which
played a key role in ensuring the success of
the event.
"As a concert promoter for over ten years, I
have to say that Robben's concert was our
BEST in terms of sound and audio quality,"
said Clarence Chang, from Jazz World Live
Series that organized the concert. "This is all
thanks to the great engineer Richard Wheeler
and DPA Microphones."
Named as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists
of the 20th Century by Musician Magazine,
Robben Ford was a member of the LA Express
and has collaborated with some of the
greatest musicians of all time including Joni
Mitchell, Miles Davis and George Harrison.
For his Hong Kong performance, Ford used
a DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone, while his
guitar amps and the bass amp were picked
up by DPA d:dicate 2011C Twin Diaphragm
Compact Cardioid Recording Microphones.
Sound engineer Richard Wheeler used a
d:dicate 2011C microphone for the kick
drum, positioning it half way into the hole
where it delivered a clean, punchy and
powerful sound. The top of the snare was
also miked using a d:dicate 2011C, which was
twinned with a DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument
Microphone positioned on the bottom of the
snare.
All of the other drums were picked up
individually using d:vote 4099 Instrument
Microphones in close proximity, while
a perfect stereo image for the live mix
was captured using a pair of DPA d:dicate
4011A stereo matched overhead recording
microphones.
Robben Ford's set also featured a Hammond
B3 organ with a Leslie speaker. Two d:vote
4099 Instrument Microphones were used to
pick up the top spinning horn rotor in stereo,
while the bass rotor was captured using
another d:dicate 2011C microphone.
Commenting on the sound quality after the
show, Wheeler said: "I was amazed by it,
especially the sound from the d:facto Vocal
Microphone. It sounded just like Robben
himself."

Audio Engineer / International Project Manager – Bangkok, Thailand
At only 28, Adisorn (aka Eddy) Kukarja may still be considered new to the audio industry, especially since he has only been in the field for 4
years. Yet, it was his potential and quick mind that recently garnered him a promotion within one of the largest rental houses in Bangkok, JSS
Production. With a Masters Degree in Creative Industries with Music and Sound from Australia, Eddy is ready to welcome more challenges and
can’t imagine being anywhere else than where he is right now.
E-Tech: How did you first get started
within the entertainment industry
and why?
Eddy: Throughout my school years, I was
never sure exactly what my career path
would be. I was always into music and I
enjoyed listening to various kinds of music
and jamming in a band with my friends.
I also had much interest in sound design
using digital synthesizers and DAWs. After
graduating with my Master degree, I returned
to Thailand, and was introduced to Jack
(CEO of JSS Production) at a concert. JSS
Production or “Jack Sound” had always been
a big name in the live sound industry in
Thailand. I did not hesitate one bit to send
in my CV to JSS and get started with the
company straight away.
E-Tech: And you've been with the
same company ever since. Do you
remember your very first show and
how it was like?
Eddy: Yes, I remember the excitement. And I
was well prepared to sweat a lot! Although,
I did have some knowledge in studio
work, I knew about the signal paths, signal
processing, mixers, etc., all that was useless
for my first steps in live sound. I needed to
know all the hands-on fundamentals first. I
was assigned to a local free concert for my
first show and I don't remember who the
artist was as I didn't really know their music.
But I do remember the feeling of walking in
to that hall on set-up day...Despite the heat
and humidity, I was so excited to be a part
of a production! I learnt on the spot about
speakers, poweramps, splitters, cables,
electricity and all that was needed to get the
show running. Not too long after that, I was
assigned to large scale shows and my tasks
evolved to something much bigger.
E-Tech: What is your weapon of
choice and why?
Eddy: A couple years ago, JSS invested in
the L-Acoustics K1 system. It was a huge
investment, but from an engineer's point
of view, it was the best investment ever.
The sound coming out of these speaker is
phenomenal. I have never heard anything
this loud while maintaining such perfect
clarity.
E-Tech: What has been the most
memorable aspect of your career
thus far?
Eddy: In every show, I feel there is always
something new to learn and plenty of
room for skill improvement. As we do a
lot of international concerts, we get the
opportunity to work with world-class
engineers, production crew, and artists
from all over the world. It is quite amazing
to witness new technology and different
working cultures.
E-Tech: If your path in life had been
different, what would you be today?
Eddy: I can imagine myself doing a bunch of
other things, but I cant imagine myself being
anywhere else but the music industry.
E-Tech: What inspires you?
Eddy: The music. The different styles, genres,
and sounds. Combined with all the rhythm,
the melodies, and the interludes.
E-Tech: Have you ever toured with
anyone? If not, who would you want
to tour with and why?
Eddy: No I haven't been on tour with any
artist, YET. And it would depend on what my
role would be for the tour. If mixing FOH, one
of the bands I would love to mix for would
be, Incubus. Simply because I enjoy their
music. I love how their music and sounds
have evolved from their first album to their
latest.
E-Tech: Lastly, what advice do you
have for those just joining the
entertainment industry?
Eddy: In this industry, it doesn't really matter
what your background is and where you
came from. It is how much you are willing to
put in. The job really does take up hours and
hours of your time. You really need to enjoy
every process of it - from the preparation,
to the loading in to an empty venue, rigging,
patching, and to finally operating the show
(not to mention pack up and load out).
