The new generation Plugs and
Sockets from ABB, consists of a
wide range of products in both
IP 44 (splashproof) and IP 67
(watertight). We offer it all, from 16
Amps up to and including 125 Amps. ”Simple plugs” up
to flexible customer designed Combination Units, all from
one single manufacturer. Here you find well designed
products to meet your need in any sensitive environment
as well as heavy-duty products for really tough
applications.
New European Standard for
Cable Glands in force
from 01.03.2001
The changes are going to
be carried out throughout Europe in order to create
harmonisation between all the products. However
there will be a long period of time where products with
the old Pg thread dimension will still be allowed to be
sold and installed.
ABB will, in accordance with the current European
standard EN 50262, adapt the cable glands in its
products from the old Pg thread dimensions to the
metric standard. Delivery of products with the new
threading will commence as of 01.03.2001
Products produced according to the new standard will
be will be marked with an “M” on the packaging during
the transitional period, to label those products with
metric threading.

Industrial Plugs and Sockets
16, 32, 63 and 125 A
Standards
The ABB range of IEC plugs and sockets complies with the requirements of the
following standards: IEC 60309-1,-2, EN 60309-1,-2, BS 4343:2 1992. Approved
by SEMKO, NEMKO, DEMKO and FIMKO (Finland).
The program also includes a range approved and certified to UL and CSA
standards.
This standard has become known as CEE, since it was published by the
Commission on Rules for the Approval of Electrical Equipment. Further work
on developing the standard has been taken over by the international
standardization organisation IEC. The standard has today been adopted as a
national standard in most European countries and in an increasing number of
countries outside Europe.
Safety through non-interchangeability
The CEE/IEC standard has made today’s electrical plugs and sockets extremely
safe. This is largely due to the use of pin-and sleeve earth connections. A
further safety feature is the non-interchangeability of plugs and sockets. The
fundamental concept of the CEE/IEC standard is that it should not be possible
to connect devices for different voltages, frequencies, current ratings and
number of poles, as they are non-interchangeable. Wherever a plug is used,
it will only fit the matching socket.
Pilot Contact
ISO 9001
ISO 14001
All male and female plugs and sockets with a rated current of 63 A and all
portable males and interlocked socket outlets with a rated current of 125 A
are equipped with a pilot contact. In all products with pilot contacts
according to IEC 60309-1 and-2, the pilot pin and sleeve are shorter than
the other connecting pins and sleeves. This means that the ”pilot circuit”
breaks before and connects after the main circuit giving optimum safety.
The maximum connection area is 4mm2.
Degree of protection
Degrees of protection for plugs and sockets conforming to IEC 60309-1 and
-2 are as follows:
- by symbols: for splashproof and watertight
- by combinations of letters and numbers as per IEC 529, e.g. IP 44 or IP 67,
where the first digit indicates the degree of protection against accidental
contact or against the entry of dust and the second digit indicates the entry of
water.

The IEC 60309 ”Clock”
Ie = 16–125A

The non-interchangeability clock is always right
The IEC standard lays down that it must be impossible
to connect devices with different number of poles,
voltages, frequencies or current ratings. The clock
diagram shows how this is achieved. The position of
the earthing sleeve relative to the keyway differs for
different voltages and frequencies. The keyway of
the outlet is always at the 6 o’clock position.
In addition, colour coding is used to make it easier
to tell the difference between devices for different
voltages and frequencies. Dimensions also vary
with current rating. Under the IEC system, pins and
sleeves must be differently spaced in devices for
different number of poles, and the earthing pin and
earthing sleeve are larger than the other pins and
sleeves. All with a view to enhanced safety.
Easier to open
The new generation of CEE Cewe plugs is much easier to open and close thanks to the twist-and-lock function! In
the diagrams below you can see how it works. The socket is delivered unlocked and can therefore be opened
immediately without the need for tools.

The Plugblocker
The plugblocker CLF 16-125 prevents the plug from being inserted into a socketoutlet or connector. The plugblocker can also be mounted on an inlet, to prevent a
connector to be in engagement. CLF is delivered with two keys.
The application is for example when you want to make sure that nobody plugs in
(energizing) a motor or other equipment (compare safety switches for fixed
installations).

The plugs and sockets are intended for an operating voltage not exceeding 50 V.
Their rated voltage is 24 and 50 V for 16 and 32 A and their degree of protection
is
IP 44.

International standard IEC
Non-interchangeability
To achieve non-interchangeability, the plugs and sockets have a main key and
a secondary key. The position of the secondary key is indicated by a number
followed by the letter h (the hour position or o´clock position). The number is
determined by the position of the secondary key relative to the main key, the
position of which is defined as 6 o´clock. No hour position is given for 20-25 V
50-60 Hz, since there is no secondary key on these plugs and sockets.
The width of the key is different for 16 and 32 A plugs and sockets. In addition,
there is a colour coding system: The cover or front part is violet on 20-25 V and
white on 40-50 V plugs and sockets. Plugs and sockets for direct current are
grey.

Modular Combi is a system consisting of compact units replacing outlets, that
traditionally has been scattered around the walls. Modular Combi is a cost
effective system with different types of outlets, RCDs and MCBs in one
location. Modular Combi is very easy to install and, thanks to the solutions and
design, it saves time and money.
The Modular Combi Range consists of two lines, one product line in plastic,
the other one in metal. Common for them are among other features that you
only need one feeding cable, it can be mounted with an already existing 4-wire
as well as 5-wire cable and that the modules are easy to modify in the future
for additional needs.
Modular Combi can easily be customised for special applications.
