Course Nature: Basic electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics are covered. Students will be
asked not only to understand basic concepts but also to be able to apply them to solve standard
problems. Memorization of equations is not emphasized.
Exams: There will be three lecture exams and a final exam. No makeup exams will be given. Absence
from exams must be excused by the instructor or a grade of zero will be assigned. Generally, a doctor’s
note is required for an absence due to illness. Any cheating on exam will result in a zero for that exam.
Grades: Exam scores will be curved if necessary. The final grades will be based on the weighted
average of lecture exams (14% each), final exam (30%), homework (9%), laboratory work (14%), and
your participation and performance in the recitation (5%). To pass this course, you must receive a
passing grade for laboratory.
Website: Mastering Physics (www.masteringphysics.com) will be used to assign the homework. Course
