Both the US and the Canadian governments have defined
exact requirements which must be satisfied by products
for use in commercial, industrial, or in public buildings.
Electrical equipment and machines in particular are
subject to testing, certification, and special labeling.
Your access authorization
You, as a manufacturer, consequently have to comply with
stringent requirements. European tests based on EN or
IEC standards on their own are not sufficient. Compliance
with national test standards, such as UL, CSA, and ANSI
standards is mandatory. TÜV SÜD Product Service offers
flexible solutions for obtaining product approvals in the
USA and Canada and thus helps you to enter these
lucrative markets.
In the USA, responsibility for the approval of these
products rests with the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA). The approval of
electrical equipment and systems is regulated in
articles 90.7, 110.2, and 110.3 of the NEC (National
Electrical Code) as well as in OSHA CFR standard
article 29.
TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH
Responsibility in Canada rests with the Standards
Council of Canada (SCC). The approval of electrical
equipment and systems is similar to the USA and
is set forth in article 2-024 of the CEC (Canadian
Electrical Code).
OSHA only recognizes products or equipment as safe
which have been listed and labeled by a recognized NRTL
(Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory). OSHA verifies
product labeling, e.g. during workplace inspections.

In Canada, TÜV SÜD is SCC-accredited to test the safety
of electrical equipment in line with Canadian requirements.
The NRTL mark, issued by TÜV SÜD Product Service
upon successful certification, documents the required
level of product safety. As a Notified Body, TÜV SÜD also
offers the certification of products to be marketed in the
European Union. You can thus document the safety of your
products in three major economic regions with a single
certification mark.

and more efficient is the certification of your product.
Weaknesses are often foreseeable before actual product
testing, and can thus be eliminated at an early stage.
NRTL certification of industrial products is based on the
testing of electrical and mechanical safety following UL,
CSA, and ANSI test standards.
On your behalf we examine which codes and standards,
out of the vast number in existence, are applicable to your
case. We then look for effective, innovative, and creative
solutions to minimize the number of tests still necessary,
thus saving time and money. Features deviating from
standard solutions will be examined in our testing
laboratory and finally certified.
The road to certification
Prior to product certification, the NRTL must conduct
an initial inspection of the production site. Certification
validity is maintained by means of regular production
site inspections, the frequency of which is determined in
the course of certification and, depending on the hazard
potential of the product and the maturity of the QM system,
can be two to four times per year.
Rollover – expertly implemented
Perhaps you already have NRTL certificates for some of
your products from other certifiers (UL, CSA). Why not
rely on our expertise as single third-party certifier? We
will be happy to take over your existing NRTL certifications
and transfer them to our TÜV NRTL mark in a rollover
procedure.
