31. Describe the legacy of classical Greece and Rome to modern Western civilization. List at least
three contributions from Greece and two from Rome. Explain how the world has benefited from
these contributions.
Western Civilization has benefited from Greek classical culture in art forms and in govermental style. Our
architecture clearly shows Greek influence in many of the government buildings that have been built such
as the Lincoln Memorial and the Alabama State Capitol building. Much of our sculpture also reflects the
lifelike human representation so well developed during the time of Greek glory. Democracy's birth took
place in the Greek city-states.
Western Civilization also benefited from the next classical society to spring out of Greek influence, the
Roman. One great technological achievement that the Romans developed that can be found throughout
the world today is road building. The Romans needed a way to connect all the conquered nations and
roads were the way to do it. They perfected the process and many of the roads built back then are still in
use today. Another technological achievement of the Romans were the aquaducts. The transport of water
to a remote city in need of water was a major feat. Modern cities have benefited from systems similar to
aquaducts.
