The Water Cycle
The sun is the main source!
1. Evaporation
2. Condensation
3. Precipitation
4. Groundwater
5. Runoff/Surface Water
6. Transpiration
Matter
3 States of Matter
Everything is made of it!
It is made up of atoms.
1. Solid- definite volume;
doesn’t change
2. Liquid- has a definite
volume but no exact
shape
3. Gas- no definite volume
or shape
Properties of Matter
1. Physical- What you can
observe (color, shape,
odor, feeling)
2. Measured propertieslength, weight, volume,
density, temperature
3. Conductivity- how easily
electrons move through
a material (heat and
electricity)
4. Magnetism- the ability of
material to be attracted
or repelled by another
material
5. Malleability- ability to be
hammered or rolled into
sheets
Changes in Matter
1. Physical changesChanges in size, shape
or physical state (phase)
of matter
Ex: boiling; freezing
2. Chemical changeschanges the identity of
the substance
Ex: color change; fumes
are produced
Heat Transfer
Conduction- Heat is moved
within a solid or from one
solid to another; the solids
MUST touch (Think of dark
pavement or a metal
material or even copper
wiring)
Convection- Heat is moved
through a liquid or gas and
once they are heated they
move faster and farther
apart (Think of a convection
cell- warm air rises!)
Ex: a cup of coffee- the
warm air is leaving the cup
Radiation- The movement of
heat in waves; the heat
travels outward in all
directions (Think of the sun or
an open fire or a candle
flame)
Conductor
Heat moves easily through it
(metal; copper)
Insulator
Doesn’t allow heat to move
through it as easily
Ex: rubber
