English 11A
TODAY’S OBJECTIVES:
Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects his/her
use of language and choice of form
AGENDA:
1. Analyze the importance of detail in determining
character. Read first paragraph from “Eveline” by
James Joyce and discuss in groups. Describe each
of the characters’ personalities: Eveline, her father,
and Frank. Predict what Eveline will do by the
end of the story, and justify your belief using clues
from the story.
2. In groups, review both the SOAPSTone strategy using the
poem Woman Work as well as poetic devices (see
handout) using the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.
3. Demonstrate how poetry can sometimes become lyrics; use
“Richard Cory” as an example. What is the theme of this
poem/song?
