Whereas, It is in Ithaca College’s mission statement to commit to the
responsible and sustainable management of natural and human
resources,
Whereas, Despite a similar Trashcan bill introduced 3/4/13,
there are still very few places for students, faculty, and staff
members to dispose of items on the walkways and paths around
campus, generating an inappropriate amount of trash and
cigarette butts littered throughout campus,
Whereas, The lack of cigarette disposals does not discourage
smoking, but encourages littering, and cigarette litter
deteriorates Ithaca’s appearance as a responsible and
sustainable campus more then the presence of cigarette
disposals do,
Whereas, there are financial incentives to adding more cigarette
disposals, such as allowing custodian staff to dedicate their time
to tasks other then picking up individual cigarette butts,
It is resolved that the Ithaca College Student Government
Association recommends that Ithaca College implement trash
cans in high – pedestrian trafficked areas and along pathways
that are currently lacking,
In addition, be it resolved further that the SGA recommends
that Ithaca College include a recycling bin next to each trashcan,
to uphold our virtues as a environmentally responsible
institution,
In addition, be it resolved further that the SGA recommends
that Ithaca College implements cigarette receptacles outside all
building entrances, and along frequented paths through campus.
Cigarette disposals may be wall mounted, to have less of a
physical presence, and may include a sticker informing students
to smoke at the appropriate range from each facility.
