Chapters 1-4
Answer the following questions with as much detail as you can muster. There are
no definitive/concrete answers that can be specifically located in the memoir. I am
looking for your insights and consequently, the development of your thoughts. Try
to incorporate a direct quote or two and be sure to CITE your citation in APA
format!
1. Why do you believe that Wiesel’s family and the Jewish population, in
general, denied or refused to heed the messages of those that had seen the
cruelty of the Nazis?
2. Find one truth about human nature and an event from the text that relate
to that truth.
3. Discuss how the following eight words that changed Elie's life: "Men to the
left! Women to the right!" (Weisel, 1960).
4. At Birkenau, Eliezer considers ending his life by running into the electric
fence. His father tells him to remember Mrs. Schächter, who had become
delusional on the train. What might account for the fact that Eliezer and his
father were able to keep their wits about them while others slipped into
madness?
