PART-TIME COMPUTER OPERATOR (EXEMPT)
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the direct supervision of a Sr. Systems Analyst, the Computer Operator will perform a
variety of computer network daily maintenance tasks, including installation and configuration of
personal computers, software, and related peripherals; troubleshooting equipment and software
to determine cause and resolution of problems encountered by staff; and maintaining appropriate
computer equipment asset records and generating reports as requested.
SALARY:
$18.77 per hour.
WORK SCHEDULE:
This is a part-time position. The hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:









Assist in maintaining the Department’s LAN system as it relates to daily backups, adding
and deleting users, granting or restricting rights, and applying necessary patches and/or
upgrades.
Install, assemble and configure computers systems, network infrastructure and
peripherals such as printers, scanners and related hardware.
Troubleshoot hardware and software problems, including e-mail, network and peripheral
equipment problems; make repairs and corrections where required.
Assist Department staff in the use of standard business and administrative software,
including word processing, spreadsheets and database management systems.
Maintain applicable records including user lists and equipment inventories.
Assists with the planning, design, research and acquisition of new or upgraded hardware
and software systems.
Maintain adequate levels of computer supplies.
Process and transport old equipment to City salvage facilities.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Equivalent to completion of two years of college-level coursework in computer science,
information technology or a related field and at least one year of experience in help-desk support
and computer installation, maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and
experience sufficient to successfully meet the requirements of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:






Possession of a valid California driver’s license with a good driving record is required.
Strong hardware/software troubleshooting skills with the ability to explain problems in
technical and non-technical terms in person and over the phone.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Access, including programming ability to develop
customized applications.
Knowledge of Novell Netware, MS Windows Server, and MS SQL.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures.
Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of equipment.
