Today
As we waited for our speaker to arrive, attendees introduced themselves and shared
new issues and/or changes in their department.
Kim said the OSU Alumni Association is adding a mentoring piece to their LinkedIn
site. She also said the Portland Business Roundtable is an opportunity for students.
The events are held on Wednesdays. Students can ride a van to Portland. It is an allday event that includes lunch. They return to campus around 3 p.m.
Kent said a group met and developed a job description for a new marketing position
in Student Affairs. Kent sent the job description to Vice Provost Larry Roper and it
was approved. Larry asked Kent and the committee for search committee
recommendations. Kent sent a list to Larry.
The Memorial Union is entering the budget cycle. Kent is working on marketing
presentation materials for Student Incidental Fees Committee (SIFC) and preparing
for the opening of the new Student Experience Center (SEC). He is planning two
openings. The building will hopefully be open for occupants to move-in in December
2014 and to students in January 2015. An Open House with displays, tours and
activities will be held the third week of winter term 2015 and a dedication for the
building will happen in spring term 2015.
Wendy said a student group is looking at another possible expansion of Dixon
Recreation Center. There will be 5-6 building dedications on campus in the next two
years – SEC, a new residence hall, Austin Hall and three more cultural centers.
A new middle eastern cultural center – Ettihad – may move into the previous home
of the Asian Pacific Cultural Center (APCC).
Wendy asked if the group had any suggestions for meeting topics for next term or
challenges to discuss to please let her know. Mobile apps vs. responsive design was
one topic mentioned. Another topic mentioned was dealing with the change of
director and how to educate him/her on your marketing plan.
Colleen shared that Student Health Services will occupy a portion of the new
residence hall for a satellite clinic. They are still determining a name and menu of
services to offer.
Majeed mentioned Guidebook, a free app, which is meant for specific events (ie.
move-in). He said it is an existing app that might be adaptable. An app should be
useful, not just another version of a website.
Kent said he purchased a Cannon 70D to do video and still photos for the MU Design
Studio. The students check out audio kits from Student Multimedia Services. Drone
and GoPro could also work. Kent uses B&H Photo Supplier.
Nancy said for the dedication of the new residence hall they are looking for an item
that all new first-year residents would receive (ie. blanket, pillow case, etc.).
Kent said screens are growing on campus and asked if we have the capacity to
manage the growth? They require AV, technology and design.
The Social Media Group is meeting next Thursday at noon in the Kelley Engineering
Board Room.
There is a marketing book group meeting.
Attendees of the ECampus Social Media Certificate Program said it was a good
workshop.
A question was asked about social media management. Majeed said he is comparing
Sprout and HootSuite. In social media it is important to monitor what is being said
as much as what your message is.
OSU has a social media policy at http://oregonstate.edu/main/social-media-policyand-guidelines. You can see OSU’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at
http://oregonstate.edu/beavernationlive/.
Carolyn Killefer from Career Services apologized for being late. She shared a little on
Career Trail – Student Development in Careers. It can be found on the Career
Services website, http://oregonstate.edu/career/trail. She asked if she can come
back to present more next term.
Carolyn said they are piloting a soft launch of Career Trail. Students can come in
with different skills and backgrounds and enter Career Trail at their level.
There are four main sections – 1) Self Assessments; 2) What can I do with my
degree? (job handbooks/resources); 3) Develop resume/interview skills (Interview
Stream to practice interviewing); and 4) Learn how to connect with others
(LinkedIn, informative interviewing, Beaver JobNet). In the future they hope to add
tips from professionals, faculty and staff. She said she welcomes feedback.
Friday, Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon in the MU Lounge is Tom Scheuermann’s
retirement event.
