LRNA 98.56 Training for Group Tutors Class #2: Active Learning and Study Strategies Sneaky Study Skills Even though most instructors know their students often do not study effectively, most students don’t think they need to spend time learning HOW to study…they want to get right to course content. They may get bored or feel like they are wasting time if the tutor talks about study skill for too long. However, there are ways of being “sneaky” and making it fun. Your group will be assigned a study skill and given a resource packet on that skill. Your job as a group is to present a skit in which a group leader incorporates that study skill into to course material. You will have to work fast: 3-5 minutes to read materials, highlight important words, discuss and compare notes 3-5 minutes to decide what course content to use, who will be leader, plan skit 2 minutes to present (each group) Think about questions to ask to get them to think about how they do the skill, and how to get the STUDENTS to share their own strategies for using this study skill for this class. Think of ways to add humor and fun to the discussion.
