Parallel structure

Logical Division
• Logical division divides a large,
complicated, or abstract topic into parts
• For example if we write about a culture,
we can look at it from the point of view of
architecture, dances or music, customs,
religious celebrations, etc.

• Select a topic: break a large topic into a
smaller ones
• Write your topic sentence
• Make an outline
• Write your supporting points and develop
those points
5
Expand a paragraph into an essay
• Topic sentence  thesis statement
• Supporting points  body paragraph
– Each supporting point will be a topic sentence
for a paragraph (i.e. 3 points  3 paragraphs)
• Development  more development
• Concluding sentence  Conclusion
6
From topic sentence to thesis
statement
• In previous meeting, we see that
a topic sentence has two parts:
the topic and the controlling idea;
• The thesis statement also has a
topic and controlling ideas.
• The supporting points are the
parts of the logical division
7
example
Chinese New Year celebrations
have three parts (topic sentence).
Chinese New Year celebrations
have three parts: the
preparations, New Year’s Eve and
New Year’s Day, and the two
weeks following New Year’s Day.
(thesis statement)
8
Vocabulary
• In addition to the word part, you can use
the following nouns:
– Time: period, stage
– Space: district, region, zone
– Parts or qualities: aspect, characteristic,
element, feature, quality
9
Parallel Structure
• When you write a thesis statement, the
supporting points must be parallel. That
is, they should be in the same part of
speech.
– In our region, most men work in offices, stores
and factories. (all nouns)
– Our culture is unique because of its
architectural, musical, and artistic traditions.
(all adjectives)
