Mathieson News Letter Volume 10, Issue 1 February 2016 Social Studies Next, we focus will be on chapter 12, A Growing Nation. During this chapter students will discuss western expansion during the 1800’s, the drastic change in lifestyle for people in the 1800’s, and the Industrial Revolution. Students will be introduced to important people of our nation including: Andrew Jackson, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth. Math Our focus in math will be Module 7, Subtracting Decimal Numbers and Graphing Coordinate Planes. Students will work on: subtracting decimals, solve word problems with decimal numbers, and graph numbers on coordinate planes. Students are given the opportunity to generate discussion, use manipulatives and rally coach to further their understanding. Literacy Our next literacy focus is fiction. Students will learn to decipher between fictional literature types and describe the points of view used in a fictional story. These next few weeks your student will be working hard toward starting an expository piece. We will continue our work using the writing process steps including: Pre-writing, drafting, editing/peer editing, final drafts and publishing. Independent Study: Students will finish their work on an expository writing piece of their choosing. This project is composed of different pieces explaining what their interest is, why they chose it, an essay with facts about their topic, and a visual aid to help present it. Due Feb. 5th. Science Science instruction will focus on chapter 3, Force of Motion. We will focus on the forces that cause objects to move. Our important vocabulary words are: gravity, force and motion. Students in 5th grade will be working on authentic reading & writing activities with any of the following teachers: Mrs. Wheeland, Mrs. Burvikovs, Mrs. Bollman, Miss Mathieson, Miss Reynolds, Mrs. Moskowitz, Mrs. McElheron, Ms. Dehring, or Mrs. Carrubba. Please remember, that our TAG groups are designed to be fluid and flexible. This means that students will be grouped in a different way throughout the year.
