‘Tis the Season!
This month, as the snow piles up, the winds begin to bellow, and the shoveling
seems never-ending, we hope you are able to find joy in new books, old friends,
and loving families this Christmas season. Reach out to family, friends, and
strangers in peace and understanding. Curl up this season with a new book, or an
old book and a new perspective. This month’s BOOKMARK is all about sharing
stories.
The Notre Dame Library wishes you and yours peace, love, and joy this Christmas.

LIBRARY NEWS

GETTING INTO THE GIVING SPIRIT – WITH STORIES!
DECEMBER 9
Sometimes, we forget the value of stories. While we are busy looking for a reputable
database article on violence in video games or a cultural overview of Rwanda, we
often forget that stories of these topics can have the power to impact us and bring us
together. The library is near bursting with graphic works, novels, and short story
collections spanning a wide range of years and places sure to expand your horizons
this season. Every day, each word we speak and every gesture we make towards each
other builds our community story; if we told our story, what would we say? This
Christmas, if you find yourself short on gifts and cash, remember that telling and
sharing stories (your own, or from a book) can be a remarkable gift.

FEATURED REVIEW
Sleeping Funny by Miranda Hill.
This wonderfully diverse collection of short stories is sure to strike a chord
with many readers. Ms. Hill explores notions of family, differences, loss, and
love in this melodic collection. While some stories are grounded firmly in
realism, a touch of the fantastic trails through this collection. Beginning with
the unhurried “Variance” and ending with the exceptionally thoughtful title
work “Sleeping Funny,” Sleeping Funny is a moving read and a beautiful
journey through a strikingly original work.
ON DISPLAY THIS MONTH
Share a Story
We have dressed our displays this month with the
season’s trimmings. Along with all the snowmen,
we have an abundance of stories to share. Nonfiction graphic works like Gandhi and How to
Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less add a visual
element to unique stories. Graphic novels, such as
The Graveyard Book and Drama let us escape our
own stories and discover new tales. Fiction,
both fantastic and real, can help discover
