January 2016 Grade 1 Newsletter Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome back to our new school year and we wish all of you a Happy New Year. To start off our year, the students will continue to work on their weekly spelling exercises and reflecting on their New Year’s resolution. We are continuing to practice retelling stories in order, read aloud and having guided reading sessions and writing. Please continue to assist your child in his/her reading and the guidelines to go with it for fluency as well as assisting your child with the high frequency words for grade 1 given to you in the fall or words of the week written in the agenda in order to help assist your child learn to be a better reader. Please review these frequency words on a weekly basis by having it written on a flash card to reinforce these key words and having your child practice these words through printing. Students will continue to receive a home Snuggle-Up leveled book to read on a daily basis as well as their Chime-In Duo-tangs which will be given to them on Friday. These Snuggle-Up books are to be returned to school on Friday and Chime-In duo-tangs are to be returned on Monday and your child will be given a new book or work sheet to help with their reading. This winter has been really cold! We are reminding all the students to dress appropriately to the weather conditions. It is recommended that your child wears waterproof gloves or mittens, snow pants, winter hat, winter scarf, sweater and Velcro slip on winter boots in preparation for the colder climate. Remember to also send extra clothes, underwear, and socks to school if your child needs to change into them. Please continue to leave gym shoes at school for indoor use as well. We recommend sporty Velcro running shoes rather than slip on types or dress shoes for indoor gym activities which are better for traction control. You are welcome to donate Kleenex boxes to the class as they are well used this season as well as anything you find useful for classroom learning or activities as we always enjoy something new to explore. Aside from the VLE website given to you, the class calendar and monthly newsletter can also be viewed at the school’s homepage under Mrs. Brown’s class. Let us start a great New Year to assist your child to learn and grow. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me or write me a note as I check your child’s agenda on a daily basis. Thank you for assisting your child and preparing him/her for school. Your co-operation and consideration is greatly appreciated.
