Students learn the meaning and use of clause connectors and are introduced to conditionals, both real and unreal. These grammar structures constitute some of the most complex structures in English and expose students to a rich variety of structures that can effectively enhance their oral and written expression. OBJECTIVES: 1. Use the following grammar structures in original sentences and paragraphs: gerunds and infinitives; clause and sentence connectors; adjective, adverb, and noun clauses; and real and unreal conditionals. 2. Compare and contrast the following grammar structures focusing on form, meaning, and purpose of each: gerunds with infinitives; adjective, adverb, and noun clauses; real and unreal conditionals. 3. Edit for errors in the use of the following grammar structures: gerunds and infinitives; adjective, adverb, and noun clauses; and real and unreal conditionals. 4. Select and apply sentence and clause connectors to paragraphs and essays that express a variety of meanings, contexts and time frames (past, present, and future time). Requirements: Advisory: Students must have passed ESL 554 with a C or better or have been placed in ESL 564 by the placement test. This is also a graded class (A-F). The following is the criteria to pass the class: 1. attend class regularly and on time (After three absences, the student may be dropped.) with the homework completed and ready to participate; 2. attend the tutoring sessions and/or computer lab one hour per week, as directed; 3. turn in all written homework assignments; 4. take and pass all quizzes and tests with a minimum average of C (73%); 5. take the final exam. Students are expected to come regularly and on time! Students who miss more than three times may be dropped from the class.
