National Trails Day Hike | 10:30am-noon
West Lake Preserve | Explore varying types of
habitat in this beautiful preserve. Bring sunscreen and
water. (KB)
Rolling Hills Ramble | 10:30am-noon
Rolling Hills Park, Prairie Pavilion
Discover the “wilds” of Rolling Hills by hiking through
prairies and forests, discovering the rich and diverse
wildlife that call this park home! This will be a longer
hike, please bring sunscreen, water and a hat. Ages 5
to adult. (SS)
Family Camp Out
Rolling Hills Park | 2-6pm
tent set-up | Crafts, fishing, nature programs, night
hike, and more. $7/person. Pre-registration required,

woods alongside a naturalist while pulling garlic

Rolling Hills Park, pond near The
Lodge | Participate in Michigan’s Free Fishing
weekend. Poles, bait and instruction available. All
ages. No license needed! Pre-registration required at

Explore the new north addition to the park while looking

parks horticulturist Kathy Squiers for hands-on learning
techniques for pruning wisteria and other woody plants.

in a safe setting.

Park Lyndon South, west lot
Take your dad out for a hike to the top of the kame
in Park Lyndon. Bring sunscreen and water. (KB)

Wetland and Upland Botany | 10am-1pm
Leonard Preserve | Visit a floodplain forest,
sedge meadow, prairie remnant, beech woodland
and more. Learn about plants along the River
Raisin. Recommended: insect repellent, shoes that
can get wet, hat, water and a small snack. Offered in
conjunction with The Stewardship Network. (FS)

Parker Mill Park | Celebrate Michigan’s
Log Cabin Day! Tour the historic mills and log cabin,
and experience some ol’ fashion games and chores.

Hike along the Huron River and see what plants and
animals make their home in the nearby woods. (KB)

Monarchs and Milkweed | 10:30am-noon
County Farm Park, Platt Rd. lot
Discover the life of an amazing insect! We will
observe live caterpillars and butterflies and then
hike through the park to learn about the habitats
that support Monarchs. Ages 5 to adult. (SS)

varied uses over time with a focus on Henry Ford’s

Summer Woods Walk | 2-4pm
Squiers Preserve | Explore wet and dry
woodlands including oak-hickory habitat and a
small buttonbush swamp. Identify plants, look for
signs of animal life, and explore where the woods
meets the wetlands. Some areas may be muddy. (FS)
Thurs, Aug 11
Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing
9pm-1am | Independence Lake Park,
Beach Center lot | Peak viewing night to see the
Perseid “shooting stars”. Park will be open special
hours for this program! Naturalist Ron Gamble will
give a short talk on meteor shower viewing starting
at 9pm. No overnight stay. In the event of inclement
weather, event may be cancelled. Pre-registration
required at parksonline.ewashtenaw.org #841005. (RG)

Butterflies of Mid-Summer | 10am-noon
Kosch Headwaters Preserve | Hike to a
flowering meadow to look for and identify
butterflies. Recommended: hat, water, and close
toed shoes in case of off-trail looking. (RG)
Sturgeon Moon Hike | 8-10pm
Independence Lake Park, Beach Cntr lot
This hike will begin with a presentation by REI about
all that you need to be prepared to go out on the
trail. Then hike, experiencing the park after dark,
looking and listening for owls, fireflies and other
nocturnal creatures. (SS)
