extensive collections at five very different and impressive museums.
We offer rich resources for learning and teaching, with a full programme of events
for schools, CPD opportunities, online access and plenty of support for self-led class
visits.
Our collections cover archaeology, Scottish history, technology, design, art, fashion
and science, giving you a wide range of opportunities for enriching your students’
learning across the curriculum.

2008–2009 will be an exciting year for National Museums Scotland with major
changes to several of our museums, including the beginning of a £46.4m project at
our flagship site – a three-year project to transform the Royal Museum building into
a museum for the 21st century.

Take a journey through Scotland’s past; from Roman and Viking settlers to present day Scots. What impact has Scotland
had on the world, and the world on Scotland? Explore Scotland’s rich and colourful past through our extensive collections.
From the Jean Muir: A Fashion Icon exhibition to our new permanent gallery, Scotland: A Changing Nation, you will find
plenty of inspirational ideas, concepts and topics for students across all aspects of the curriculum.
• Scotland: A Changing Nation, a new permanent gallery will open in July 2008. Explore five major themes
affecting life in modern-day Scotland including war and social change.
• Check out life in the Canadian subarctic in our exhibition, Extremes: Life in Subarctic Canada (until Sun 5 October)
and discover some of Scotland and Canada’s shared history.
• Explore the workings of the Jean Muir fashion house in our new exhibition, Jean Muir: A Fashion Icon (opens
Fri 7 November). Discover why Jean Muir was an iconic figure in the fashion world, and unravel the distinctive
Jean Muir look.
• Celebrate Charles Darwin’s bicentenary in 2009 with Darwin – The Great Debate. Give your students the
opportunity to debate Darwin’s Theory of Evolution alongside inspiring and thought-provoking guest speakers.

Flying high…
What better place to bring the past to life, or to examine the future of technology? Step right back into the past
at Britain’s best preserved Second World War airfield, home to a unique collection of civil and military aircraft that
chronicle the story of flight and demonstrate Scotland’s role in it.
• A new interactive flight exhibition will open mid 2009. Examine how and why things fly, with interactive
displays demonstrating the mechanics of flight.
• East Fortune Airfield has been designated a historic scheduled ancient monument. A new exhibition,
examining the history of the airfield and the role it played in both World Wars, will open mid 2009.
The exhibition will reveal the history of the site, from First World War airships to a collection of objects
and artefacts detailing the story of the men and women based at this RAF airfield.
• Get up close to our amazing aircraft, and join the jet-set when you board Concorde.*
*All Concorde visits must be pre-booked separately.

Escape to the country . . .
Discover what life was like for country people in the past and how this has shaped Scotland’s countryside today.
Experience how people lived through hardship and compare it with modern farming methods. Examine contemporary
issues including GM foods, fox hunting, dairy production and how our food gets from field to fork.

A force to be reckoned with?
Within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, discover the impact of war on Scotland’s history, identity and reputation
abroad. Why did so many Scots join forces and for what reasons – clan, country or money? How did the First and
Second World Wars change Scotland’s economy? What social changes did war introduce for women? Relive the dark
days of the World Wars through personal letters and mementoes, as well as military equipment. Uncover stories of
courage and determination, victory and defeat, heroics and heartache.
• Visit the Call to Arms exhibition and explore the history, tactics and weapons of Scottish infantry, from 14thcentury Galloglass mercenaries and 17th-century Highland warriors to today’s modern soldiers. See examples
of modern infantry weapons and get to grips with replica swords and armour in the hands-on section (until
Sun 1 Feb 2009).
• First World War object handling sessions – explore aspects of trench warfare through real and replica objects.
• Follow the First and Second World War trails around the museum.
