Introduction
The format of the paper was as follows. Paper I – Essay on a General Topic and Translation from
Russian into English (50 marks). Paper II – Reading Comprehensions and Oral Test (75 marks).
Paper III – Prescribed Texts: (A.S.Pushkin, The Snowstorm); I.Turgenev, Three sketches from a
Hunter’s Album, The Looner, I.Bunin, Shadowed Paths; A.Chekov, The Darling - (75 marks).
Statistics:
Seven candidates registered for this examination. One candidate failed. One candidate was absent
for all three papers.

Comments:
The candidates demonstrated a very good knowledge of grammar, spelling and syntax. The lexical
knowledge was quite satisfactory. The candidates’ performance in the Prescribed Texts Section
indicated a good knowledge of the literature texts and the ability to express their attitude to various
issues discussed in these works.
