Summary of the Post
The UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) is a cross-UCL Institute, launched as a
Provost’s strategic development in 2010, which aims to lead research, knowledge exchange,
enterprise and advanced teaching in the area of risk and disaster reduction (RDR). By providing a
focus for UCL’s RDR activities, with its breadth of disciplinary emphasis, promotion of novel
multidisciplinary research and translation into practice, the Institute aims to assume a role of
leadership in RDR both in the UK and internationally. The Institute is hosted in the Faculty of
Mathematics and Physical Sciences, but operates across all UCL’s faculties, spanning earth and
space sciences, statistics, engineering and global health and contributes to UCL’s Grand Challenges.
The IRDR has 3 core staff, 7 academic staff, 12 visiting staff, 9 research staff and runs three masters
programmes, an MRes and two MSc with about 25 students, and has a research student population
of over 20.
We are seeking to appoint an Enterprise and Promotions Manager to work in the IRDR, developing
Enterprise and professional training initiatives and promoting the IRDR’s activities through public
events, publicity and the media, mapping onto new UCL and MAPS Faculty priorities.
The multidisciplinary nature of risk to disasters overlaps with a range of industry sectors including,
insurance and finance, the built and natural environment and space. This creates multidimensional
opportunities that places the IRDR as a hub for UCL in providing research, consultancy, advice and
training, to both commercial and social enterprise. We have partnered business and humanitarian
agencies, undertaken consultancy for private and public sectors organisations in the UK and
internationally, and participated in training and continuing professional development.
The position would be held in the IRDR and is full-time, but a fractional appointment or job share
would also be considered. The post may require international travel and working out of “office
hours” for promotional events. Flexible working can be organised.

2. Liaise with external commercial and social enterprise, in collaboration with UCL Corporate
Partnerships and BEAMS School Enterprise Office, with the aim of building long-term
commercial and social enterprise partnerships in the area of risk and disaster reduction.
3. Act as a broker for delivery of high quality consultancy in the area of risk and disaster reduction
across UCL to financial institutions, legal firms, brokerages and consultants; and manage the
development of the consultancy portfolio.
