This individual will be responsible for educating the public about aquatic invasive species (AIS) through implementation of the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program at public boat landings. This position is based out of the North Lakeland Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters, and will function largely outdoors at boat launches in the Presque Isle and Manitowish Waters area. Hours: Approximately 30-40 hours/ week. Flexible work week. Must be able to work some early mornings and weekends, including Memorial Day and 4th of July weekends. Length of Service: 500 hours total (with approximate start date of May 15) Compensation: $10.50 per hour Requirements: General: Outgoing personality- able to converse with the public in a friendly, positive manner. Strong organizational skills. A cheerful, positive attitude. Reliability and the ability to self-motivate and work independently. Ability to collect, enter, and compile accurate data in written and electronic formats. Willingness to work outside in a variety of weather conditions. Valid driver’s license and must provide own transportation to public boat landings in the Manitowish Waters and Presque Isle area. Water-related Experience: Personal interest in lakes, limnology, fisheries, conservation biology, environmental education, or a related field. Basic knowledge of aquatic invasive species. Training will be provided in Clean Boats, Clean Waters AIS curriculum and protocol. Expectations and Opportunities: This position is responsible for, and will gain experience in, the following areas: 1. Sharing your knowledge of Wisconsin’s AIS through the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program. o Implement watercraft inspection program targeted at preventing the spread of AIS. o Inform and educate boaters on how to inspect and clean boat hulls, live wells, trailers, props and other equipment. Inform boaters about Wisconsin laws regarding invasive species. o Converse in a positive manner with the public about prevention steps to stop the spread of AIS and engage the public in active prevention. o Share educational information with boaters about AIS, including identification and impacts. o Conduct Clean Boats, Clean Waters boater surveys. Keep excellent records. o Input written survey data into Surface Water Integrated Monitoring System (SWIMS) database. o Collect specimens and report any new water body infestations at assigned boat landings. 2. Participate as part of the dedicated Education Team at the Discovery Center. Conduct community outreach at boat landings. Communicate needs to other staff members as needed.
