THE MAEGENE NELSON VISITING SCHOLAR PROGRAM IN
CROSS-DISCIPLINARY ARTS
Application Procedure:
Each unit can nominate up to two visiting scholars (or multi-scholar groups) per year. Nominees should
contribute significant involvement well above the usual one or two day duration, i.e., expenses (travel, support,
stipend, etc.) for the visit will exceed $5,000 up to the maximum amount available (eventually, approximately
$12,900 annually).
Nominations require a standard application form with attached résumé(s). Send completed applications to the
associate dean / director of the Fine Arts Doctoral program, who submits them to the Graduate Committee for
discussion and ranking. These recommendations are reviewed by the CVPA Awards & Research Committee,
which, following discussion, issues its own independent recommendations to the dean and the director of the
program, who will make the final selection (or selections, to allow for possibility of failed arrangements).
In order to integrate visitors within existing curricular activities, completed applications are ordinarily due to the
CVPA no later than January 20 of the second year preceding that proposed for the visit. This timeline allows
completion of the selection process approximately 18 months prior to the visit. Special requests (e.g., to carry
forward an approved visit that did not come to fruition within the projected timeline, or to approve a project
planned more than 2 years in advance) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
