Dear Parishioners,
At the beginning of this Advent season I told you that the theme we would be using was “We
Wait in Joyful Hope.” As we all know so well, the “joy” of the season that comes from the anticipation of the celebration of the birth of Christ, especially as it is reflected in the smiles and laughter of children, was dramatically changed with the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut last Friday. The promise of joy in this beautiful season of Advent has changed into the unspeakable grief of families and a whole community who have lost loved ones as victims of senseless and demonic violence. For those of us who had to preach the Good News of Jesus
Christ on a Sunday called “Gaudete”, “Rejoice”, we struggled to find words that might bring some small solace and comfort to our own community. I have to honestly say that I was moved to tears many times not only by the preaching that I heard but by the beauty of the music of our choirs and the joyful sound of the Mariachis at the noon Mass in honor of Our Lady of
Guadalupe. Even in the midst of unbearable grief, our community was able to come together to proclaim that God’s promise is the victory over death in the life, death and rising of Jesus
Christ. We still do “wait in joyful hope,” knowing that we live in a world whose peace is so often shattered by violence. So let us pray urgently the Advent prayer “Come, Lord Jesus!
Come quickly!”
If you were not at the 10:00 am or 5:30 pm liturgies, I urge you to read Fr Joe O’Keefe and
Deacon Peter Folan’s homilies from this past Sunday. They can be found on our parish website.
I hope that you will be with us for our Christmas liturgies but, if you are traveling, know that you will be remembered in our Masses on Christmas Day.
In the love of Christ,
Fr. Bob

Del Escritorio del Padre Bob
Queridos Parroquianos,
Padre Bob
