Missouri’s southern border

 President James Monroe stated that the European
countries would no longer be allowed to create new
colonies or interfere with independent nations in the
Western Hemisphere

 Before the Trail of Tears
 Act that stated that the president could negotiate treaties
with Native Americans to relocate them to the areas west
of the Mississippi River
 94 treaties were signed with Native American tribes
Remember the Alamo
 Battle of the Alamo was an important battle in the Texas
War of Independence
 Leaders: James Bowie, William Travis and Davy
Crockett
 Fought against Mexican soldiers (Mexican-American
war)
 Texans lost at the Alamo, THIS LOSS encouraged the
remaining soldiers to continue fighting and eventually
gained the Texan independence at the Battle of San
Jacinto
Trail of Tears 1838
 Treaty of New Echota: Cherokee had to give up their
land east of the Mississippi
 1,000 mile route from Georgia to Oklahoma
 4000 Native Americans died (Disease, starvation, and
exposure)
Oregon Trail- 1840’s
 Thousands of Pioneers moved to Oregon
 Oregon Trail- 2000 miles
 This trail had many resources for survival of this route
1849- Gold Rush
 Gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in California
 In two years, 40,000 prospectors came to California
 Few found gold
