Do Now

What happens when our bodies get too hot? Too
cold? Think back to the homeostasis unit
COVER UP: REGULATION
Outline for the Unit

Week One
The purpose of skin, membranes and layers
 Diagram location of layers of skin and organs
 Explain how the epidermis grows, keratinizes and is lost
 Explain hair, nails, skin color and melanocytes


Week Two
Explain the importance of the hypodermis, inflammation and
thermoregulation
 Explain diseases of integumentary system
 Explain treatment of diseases
 Diagnose and prescribe treatments for the diseases

To get an A…
Leave this class knowing (or prepared to learn)
what dermis, hypodermis and thermoregulation
mean. Also know the effect of inflammation on
the body.
Know these important dates

Thermoregulation

Too hot?
Hypodermis  dermis
 Sweat glands
 Circulatory:

Methods of heat loss
 Can
anyone name the 4 methods of heat loss?
Heat Transfer

Radiation
 Heat


Conduction
 Contact

Convection
 Air


circulating around body
Evaporation
 Sweat
 vapor
Thermoregulation

Too cold?
 Circulatory
system
 Muscular
 Generates
heat
 Shivers
 Hair


Hypothermia
 Symptoms:
coldness, confusion, lethargy, shivering
 At risk: very young, very thin, or older individuals
Damaged skin

Shallow cuts
 Example:
paper cuts
 New epidermal cells regenerate

Deep cuts
 Swelling
comes from dilating blood vessels
 This increases blood flow (with antibodies along with it)
 Increased heat kills bacteria
Burns



First, second, and third degree burns

Clinical Focus Question

As winter and cold weather approach, your family
is concerned about your grandmother. Your
grandmother is healthy, 83-year old woman who
lives alone and is proud of her independence. She
does not have a radiator, despite your family’s
offer to purchase and install one for her. She says
she is too old to get used to “new things now.” What
suggestions could you offer to help your
grandmother maintain her health during the cold
weather? Explain your rationale using lessons from
anatomy.
Temperature Regulation Diagram

Make 2 diagrams in the form of a cycle to explain
how the body reacts to…
 Being
too hot and being too cold
 Hint: This will take some thinking!
