Overview
The objective of the Secondary English Language Arts (SELA) program is
to improve communication skills and to develop critical thinking.
Communication skills will include writing, reading/listening, and
speaking. Critical thinking will be developed by exposing students to
ideas through literature and various multimedia. At the end of the year,
students should be able to recognize and analyze ideas; ultimately, they

Homework
Homework will be assigned and will be directly related to the student’s
ability to use his/her class time effectively. Homework could include
grammar practice, essay writing, reading, research, projects, and
presentation preparations.
Students are encouraged to check Engrade in order to review dates of
assignments, although reminders and thorough instructions will be given
during class. Homework should be written in the students’ agendas on a
daily basis.
Students are expected to read from a novel of their choice AT HOME for a
minimum of 10 minutes per day.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated via Learning and Evaluation Situations; this
will allow students to be assessed based on written assignments/tests,
essays (that inform, advise, persuade, and/or analyze), projects, reading
comprehension assignments/tests, in-class activities/participation, oral
reports, group work and formal tests/exams (in accordance with the
Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport).
All assignments will be given in advance with ample time for completion.
Assignments must be submitted according to the guidelines imposed by
North Star Academy Laval. Please note that a late penalty (-20%/day) will
be applied for a maximum of 3 days, after which the student will
automatically receive a grade of zero.
Plagiarism
Please note that any form of plagiarism or cheating will result in a grade of
zero on the test or assignment, and a letter from the teacher will be placed in
your file. A repeated offence may lead to even more serious consequences.
