POTD: The earth's surface is constantly changing.
All
over the world everyday there are earthquakes, floods
and volcanoes that quickly change our world. Some
changes are too small to see. Others cause tremendous
damage and costs millions of dollars to clean up.
What is the main idea?
A. It is expensive to clean up the damage.
B. Sometimes we can't see the changes.
C. The Earth's surface is always changing.
Theme
• The theme is the message that the author wants to tell
readers. Every story that you read has a theme. It may be
stated or unstated. Details within the story provide clues to
the theme.
• Some universal themes:

POTD:
•Alicia is 9 years old.
•Allen is A years old.
•Allen is 3 times as old as Alicia.
DeWayne says that Allen’s age, in years, can be found by
solving the equation 9= A x 3. Genevieve says that
Allen’s age, in years, can be found by solving the equation 3 x
9= A. Who is right? Explain your answer
What about the remainder?
– When you divide to solve a word problem, you
may or may not end up with a remainder.
– How does the remainder affect your final
answer?
– After solving the word problem, think about
what the remainder means.
Ways to address remainders:
• *Remain as a left over
• *Partitioned into fractions or decimals
• *Discarded leaving only the whole number
answer
• *Increase the whole number answer up one
• *Round to the nearest whole number for an
approximate result
Mary had 44 pencils. Six pencils fit into each of her
pencil pouches.
On the next few slides we will analyze different word problems
involving 44 ÷6 = ? where the answers are best represented
as:
• Problem A: 7
• Problem B: 7 r 2
• Problem C: 8
• Problem D: 7 or 8
• Problem E: 7 62
Discarded leaving only the whole number
answer Problem A
• Mary had 44 pencils. Six pencils fit into each
of her pencil pouches. How many pouches
did she fill?
• 44 ÷ 6 = p; p = 7 r 2. Mary can fill 7 pouches
completely.

Problem B
• Mary had 44 pencils. Six pencils fit into each
of her pencil pouches. How many
• pouches could she fill and how many pencils
would she have left? 44 ÷ 6 = p; p = 7 r 2;
Mary can fill 7
• pouches and have 2 left over.
Increase the Whole Number by 1 Problem C
• Mary had 44 pencils. Six pencils fit into each
of her pencil pouches. What would the
fewest number of pouches she would need in
order to hold all of her pencils?
• 44 ÷ 6 = p; p = 7 r 2; Mary will need 8 pouches
to hold all of the pencils.
Divide Equally and pass out the
Remainder Problem D
• Mary had 44 pencils. She divided them
equally among her friends before giving one
of the leftovers to each of her friends. How
many pencils could her friends have
received?
• 44 ÷ 6 = p; p = 7 r 2; Some of her friends
received 7 pencils. Two friends received 8
pencils.
Remainder as a Fraction
• Mary had 44 pencils and put six pencils in
each pouch. What fraction represents the
number of pouches that Mary filled?

Inquiry :Earth’s Magnetic Field
Watch this video: http://sciencenetlinks.com/studentteachersheets/exploringmagneticfeldsactivity1/
Predict what you think will happen when you put a magnet
under a baggie filled with Iron Filling and place it on a
magnet. Start your sentence with:
I predict that when I…..
Next, gently shake your iron fillings so they are mostly on top of the index card.
DO NOT OPEN THE BAGGIE!
The fillings should NOT be lumpy.
Draw what you see.
Then carefully lift the bag and set it on a paper clip.
Describe what happens and draw it in your notebook.
Can you predict what will happen to the iron filings if
you place a magnet on the table and set the bag down
on top of the magnet? Write your prediction in your
notebook.
Now place the magnet on the table. Then gently
pick up the bag and place it on the magnet. What
happens? Was your prediction correct? Update your
results and draw what you see in your notebook.

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking.
I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Reader’s Workshop
POTD: When Curtis transferred to our high school from some
fancy private school, I was assigned the job of showing him
around our building. First, I showed him our trophy case. Our
school has done put together some quality teams and programs
over the years, so our trophy case was pretty full. Curtis was not
impressed. He claimed that the trophy case was at least twice
as big as ours and much more crowded. Next I showed him our
swimming pool. Not every high school has a swimming pool, so
we were proud of ours, but Curtis couldn't care less. "The
swimming pool at my old school is bigger and more modern.
This one looks kind of dirty," he said with disdain. I continued to
guide Curtis around the school, showing him our cafeteria,
gymnasium, and even our garden, but Curtis seemed
disappointed with everything that he saw. He'd quickly compare
it to his old school, which in his words was superior to ours in
every way. The last thing I showed Curtis was the front door. I
told him that he would like this one best because he could walk
through it and go back to his old school.

Epaminondas
A Folk Tale Retold
(1) Epaminondas lived with his mama in a little house on a hill. He was a sweet boy, but as his mama always said, not
the brightest bulb in the lamp! Most days, Epaminondas went to visit his auntie. She lived on the other side of the
hill. He loved to walk through the forest and cross the stream to her house. Most days she gave him something to
take home.
(2) One day Auntie gave Epaminondas half a cake. He grabbed it in his fists and carried it home. When he got there, it
was smeared all over his hands. "What have you got there?" asked Mama.
(3) "Cake, Mama," said Epaminondas.
(4) "Epaminondas, that's no way to carry cake!" said Mama. "You wrap it in clean leaves and put it in your hat. Now
will you remember that?"
(5) "Yes, Mama," said Epaminondas.
(6) The next week, Auntie gave Epaminondas some fresh, sweet butter. He wrapped it in leaves and put it in his hat. It
was a hot day. The butter began to melt and when he got home, it was all over him. His mama cried, "That's no
way to carry butter! You wrap it in leaves, cool it in the brook, and carry it home! Will you remember that?"
(7) By and by, Auntie gave Epaminondas a puppy. He wrapped it in leaves, cooled it in the brook, and carried it home.
His mama rubbed the poor shivering pup with a soft towel and fed it warm soup. "That's no way to treat a puppy!"
she said. "You tie a string around its neck, put it on the ground, and walk it home! Will you remember?"
(8) "Yes, Mama," said Epaminondas.
(9) Today, Auntie gave Epaminondas a freshly-baked loaf of bread. He tied a string around it, put it on the ground, and
walked home! The birds loved it because there were enough crumbs on the ground to feed a flock for a week! But
when he got home, all he had left was a small, sticky lump of bread stuck to the string!
(10) His mama shook her head and said, "No sense telling you any more, Epaminondas! Now I'm going to get more
bread from Auntie. You see those pies cooling on the porch? They're for the bake sale. While I'm gone, you mind
how you step in those pies!" (11) Now we know she meant "be careful and don't step in the pies," but
Epaminondas minded his mama. He stepped right in the middle of each pie! When his mama got home and saw
the mess, she just laughed. "Oh, Epaminondas, you ain't got the brains you were born with … but I love you
anyway!" Then she gave him a big hug … and a slice of fresh bread.

Identifying Personal Stressors
STRESS- Mental or physical reaction to pressure, a threat, a conflict, or frustration.
Certain events can create stress
Every individual experiences different levels of stress in response to different events.
Ex. Swimming, forgetting to bring your homework, diving off the high dive, talking in
front of the class, getting in trouble, etc.
There are four pieces of the construction paper taped to the wall labeled –
at home, at school, with friends, in the neighborhood
Write one personal stressor per sticky note (you may write as many ideas as you wish
on the sticky note.)
Place each note on the appropriate piece of construction paper
Let’s Chat:
How does it feels to experience each stressor? How can you most effectively handle
each situation?

POTD: Dan and Doug led the journalism club. While Dan was generally
regarded as a better writer than Doug, Doug was invaluable to the publication
for his investigative skills. Together, they had uncovered a scandal in the
cafeteria that had been dubbed "Horsemeat-Gate." Due to Dan and Doug's
compelling story, interest in the high school paper grew. Dan was even
interviewed by the local paper. During the interview Dan spoke at length
about all he had done to write the story. He failed to mention Doug's
involvement. Doug felt slighted and confronted Dan, but Dan asserted that he
was the main writer of the story and therefore deserved the credit. Shortly
after the blowout, Doug left the journalism club. The people of the town were
interested in the high school paper, but without Doug's knack for finding good
stories, the quality of the paper diminished and so did interest in the paper.
Now that his popularity surge had ended, Dan had more time to think. He
reasoned that they'd still be on top of the world if Doug hadn't been so
stubborn and selfish.

Reader’s Workshop
POTD: Twin brothers Jack and Willie had more differences than commonalities.
Willie was tall and Jack was short. Willie was always joking around while Jack was a
very serious person. Perhaps their greatest difference was that Willie learned things
quickly and easily in school while Jack had to study long and hard. Willie had the time
of his life during high school. He played around a lot, did very little work, and managed
to get Cs in most of his classes. On the other hand, Jack had a difficult time during high
school. He played around very little, worked really hard, and, like Willie, managed to
get Cs in most of his classes. When the twins went away to college, they acted in much
the same way even though things had changed. Willie went right to his usual tricks of
skating by and doing as little as possible, while Jack continued to work hard in all of his
classes. Since he had worked hard his whole life, Jack noticed that the work in college
was much more difficult, but he was prepared for it. Willie did not really notice that
the difficulty had changed until the semester was over. Jack managed to get Bs and Cs
in all of his courses while Willie earned mainly Ds and Fs and was placed on academic
probation.
